Unmatched Force for Innovation & Impact
Entrepreneurship Center at UC San Diego
Join the nexus of a vibrant creative ecosystem, entrepreneurial network and experiential learning.
美国加州大学圣迭戈分校 has emerged over the last decade as a significant driver for innovation and economic as well as social impact - with effects now apparent statewide, nationally, and globally. San Diego’s innovation ecosystem is redefining the boundaries of entrepreneurial success. In 2024, UC San Diego-affiliated companies raised $1.9 billion in capital—a record-breaking milestone that reflects the university’s critical role as a driver of innovation and economic growth. While the number includes companies launched by 美国加州大学圣迭戈分校 faculty, students, and alumni - the culture of innovation fostered in San Diego is undeniable.
This achievement highlights the strength of a collaborative ecosystem in which students, alumni, and startups leverage UC San Diego’s intellectual property, research infrastructure, and support networks. It is a testament to San Diego’s emergence as a global hub for innovation—one where creativity, research, and commercialization converge to generate solutions that shape industries and create jobs. Further driving that point, Natallie R. reported in The San Diego Union-Tribune that San Diego startups recorded $5.7 billion in venture capital dollars in 2024. She advanced an optimistic outlook for 2025 with Mike Krenn of Connect commenting, “I think there’s a good batch of companies that are lining up for potential IPO’s and that would really help strengthen the San Diego market as well,”
Innovation Ecosystems as Catalysts for Growth
In a rapidly evolving global economy, success increasingly depends on the ability to engage strategically with innovation ecosystems. Research by Fiona Murray and Dr.Phil Budden from MIT Sloan Management Review underscores the importance of fostering collaborative environments where institutions, businesses, and communities coalesce to drive sustainable growth.
"The next milestone for our region isn't just about creating more startups – it's about building sustainable companies that can scale globally while maintaining strong roots in our community." - Pat Giblin
UC San Diego exemplifies this principle. A 2019 study estimated the university’s economic impact at $16.5 billion annually, supporting 100,000 jobs. The $1.9 billion raised in 2024 builds on that foundation, reinforcing San Diego’s status as a “destination for innovation” and strengthening its reputation as a leader in advancing high-impact research and entrepreneurship.
The People Behind the Progress
The success of UC San Diego’s innovation ecosystem is powered by people who embody the university’s mission to educate, innovate, and serve. This year, the Entrepreneurship Center welcomes Patrick Giblin to its advisory board along with Alex Ferre with ALMA Life Sciences . As the Board grows, their combined experience in fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems and working with founders will be instrumental as UC San Diego expands its influence in California and beyond.
Existing board members also highlight the university’s transformative role in shaping innovation. Pat Giblin observed, “San Diego stands at a unique inflection point where our deep technical talent, world-class research institutions, and entrepreneurial spirit are converging to create something special. What we need now is to strengthen the bridges between academia and industry, particularly in emerging technologies like AI and machine learning."
A Call to Action: Building the Future Together
UC San Diego’s ecosystem thrives on partnerships. From breakthrough technologies to entrepreneurial ventures, the university fosters a culture of collaboration that turns potential into impact. As the university continues to expand its reach, opportunities abound for individuals and organizations to contribute - from law firms to industry sponsors, and investors.
For those inspired by the mission to innovate toward impact and transformation, joining UC San Diego’s advisory board offers a chance to help shape the future of entrepreneurship and economic development. Together, we can extend the boundaries of what’s possible.
