Unmanned Demands

I am so grateful for my engineering education. It gives me the opportunity to appreciate the break neck speed of technological innovation that brilliant researchers and innovative companies have introduced to society. The most impressive developments have come in the form of forever shrinking electronics, their increased logical processing power, the sophisticated software made possible by it, and the complex systems that both are integrated into. Really, could you imagine carrying around a walk-men, camera, desktop computer, telegraph, calculator, notepad, and rolodex instead of having all of these functions combined into a smart phone that fits in your pocket? Just like the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age before us recognize the predominate technological material of the time, I am convinced history will eventually remember our period the Silicon Age in honor of the computer chips that have made so many of our recent advances possible.

An exciting new industry made possible and partly driven by the miniaturization of technology has been the development of unmanned and autonomous systems, especially air vehicles (UAVs). Without the need for an on-board pilot, engineers are succeeding all over the world in creating remotely controlled or autonomous aircraft for applications including land surveying, agricultural monitoring, real-estate photography, infrastructure inspection, and parcel delivery. UAVs are able to aggressively push the limits of what is possible in part because they don't have a human pilot taking up space and whose safety is a concern (this by no means is meant to imply there are no safety concerns for the people and property in the vicinity of a UAV's operation). It does mean that UAVs are capable of maneuvers and operations in environments where a human pilot is not though.

In service to this growing market, Aeroprobe has developed the industry leading Micro Air-Data System (uADS): a compact data acquisition and processing computer that pairs with our 5-hole air-data probes to provide UAV operators and developers with the critical flight measurements they need to improve the safety and performance of their aircrafts. This turn-key system is simply unmatched in terms of the quality and quantity of data it provides in such a light-weight and low-power package; it is the perfect solution to support UAV development through research phases and industrial production. Our commitment to our customers also keeps us ahead of the regulatory environment. We are happy to announce our uADS has achieved MIL-STD 810G and 461F and FAA DO-160F certifications.
