Unlocking your success: a guide to the limitless possibilities of networking

By Andreia Moniz e Castro and Sanskar Ranglani , Life Science Careers & Employability Interns

As keen fourth-year life science students, we’ve identified numerous networking opportunities, both on and off campus. In this post, we want to demystify what networking really looks like and share tips to improve your interactions in formal and informal settings.

Networking

The term 'networking' has its roots in the field of electrical engineering and telecommunications. The word itself has gained a broader meaning referring to professional or social interactions aimed at creating and fostering connections and relationships.

Networking is an ongoing process. It involves regularly checking in with your connections, offering support and celebrating their achievements. In brief and in the least selfish way, networking is what we “grownups” call making friends.

Importance of networking

In today's interconnected world, your network isn't just a collection of contacts; it's the key to skyrocketing your career and personal growth. It's not about popularity; it's about building a community that opens doors to diverse opportunities. Your network becomes your support system, offering guidance in challenges and celebrating victories together. In the competitive professional landscape, networking isn't just an asset, it is fundamental.

Formal networking

Formal networking is about building and maintaining professional relationships to enhance career opportunities and business connections. Here are five steps to help you:

1.?????? Attend conferences, seminars and industry-specific events to meet like-minded professionals. Keep an eye on Glasgow Careers where you can find a range of events at which you have the opportunity to network (eg. alumni speed networking, guest speakers, careers fairs and employer pop-ups).

2.?????? The way you present yourself can influence how others perceive you. Dressing appropriately, maintaining good posture, smiling, making eye contact and/or offering a firm handshake demonstrates that you're respectful and keen. When it comes to dressing appropriately, there's no hard-and-fast rule. Research what's typical for different types of events and industries. You can also contact the event organisers to clarify dress code.

3.?????? Preparing a short 'elevator pitch' about yourself can be helpful. Craft a concise and compelling introduction that covers who you are, what you do and your professional aspirations. However, avoid excessive rehearsal and keep it relaxed. You don’t always need to use your elevator pitch, but it can be useful when people enquire about your background and interests. Plus, it can open up conversations when you’re not sure how to start. Bonus tips here.

4.?????? Ask open-ended questions to start meaningful discussions. Actively listening and showing interest in others’ experiences and perspectives can lead to more impactful and valuable professional connections. Remember that you don’t need to stick to professional topics only. It’s okay to just get to know people. At a conference, our lunch included banter around cheese!

5.?????? After meeting someone, follow up with a personalised email or LinkedIn message expressing your pleasure in meeting them. When you invite them to connect on LinkedIn be sure to add a personalised message to remind them how you met. Feel free to ask any follow-up questions you might have.

Informal networking

Informal networking is extremely similar to formal networking, so most of tips above will help. It may come more naturally to extroverted individuals, but here are four tips for honing your informal networking skills. The main difference between formal and informal networking is that they occur in different settings. Informal networking opportunities can take many forms and be unexpected, so it's important to be on the lookout for them.

One of my friends secured funding to start her business because she pitched her idea in a quick chat with someone at the airport. In our personal experience, both of us ended up getting placement offers by talking to people in our everyday lives about our research interests, like the subway and a tutorial. There are many events at or around the university where you can informally network with others. For example, joining a club or society, participating in a competition and chatting to your classmates can help you meet people with similar interests to you.

Practice active listening is a skill that will take you a long way. To demonstrate that you are not only listening but understanding what the other person is saying is indispensable, under any circumstance – while networking, during conversations with your friends, and at your interviews.

Essentially, informal networking opportunities are endless. They also come with the benefit of being in a low-pressure environment, so if you're not feeling it, you always have the option to walk away. Incorporating informal networking in your daily life can make a big difference. Always be open for a spontaneous conversation with people around you. Being able to read the room to find the opportunity to network without being in a formal setting is a skill that can pay off.

These are a few tips that we have tried to actively incorporate in ourselves, and they have enhanced our ability to network. Find out what works for you and get networking!

Now it’s your turn!

Absolutely inspiring to see Andreia and Sanskar team up to share these valuable insights! ?? Networking is much like what Helen Keller said - Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much. Keep exploring and connecting! ???? #TeamworkMakesTheDreamWork #Inspiration #GrowthMindset
