Unlocking Your Potential: Exercises to Harness Your Interest-Based Nervous System (Part 3)

Unlocking Your Potential: Exercises to Harness Your Interest-Based Nervous System (Part 3)

Dr. William Dodson’s insights into the Interest-Based Nervous System highlight five motivational pillars: interest, novelty, challenge, urgency, and passion. These pillars serve as a foundation for engaging your intrinsic motivation and enhancing your focus, creativity, and resilience. Unlike the importance-based nervous system, which relies on external rewards, obligations, or perceived necessity, the Interest-Based Nervous System is intrinsically motivated. According to Dr. Dodson, a person with an Interest-Based Nervous System must engage the motivational pillars to activate focus and effort. Otherwise, the nervous system remains disengaged.

This framework is particularly relevant for individuals with ADHD, whose dopamine pathways are highly responsive to activities that align with personal interests. When engaged in tasks they are passionate about, they experience heightened creativity, focus, and productivity.

Practical Applications of Interest-Based Nervous System

Education

Dr. Dodson’s research challenges conventional educational practices that rely heavily on rote memorization and standardized tests. He advocates for personalized, interest-driven learning environments that empower students to thrive. By aligning curriculum with students’ passions, we can unlock their potential and enhance retention and engagement.

Workplace Strategies

Organizations can adopt IBNS principles to foster creativity and innovation. Encouraging employees to pursue projects aligned with their interests and strengths can boost morale, productivity, and overall well-being.

Personal Growth

Understanding your own IBNS can help in making informed choices about careers, hobbies, and relationships. Identifying what truly captivates and energizes you can lead to a more fulfilling and balanced life

Exercises to Leverage Your Interest-Based Nervous System

Before You Start: Instructions and Reflection Points

  1. Choosing Your Exercises: Start by selecting one or two exercises from each pillar. Focus on activities that resonate with you most strongly.
  2. Creating a Routine: Incorporate these exercises into your daily or weekly schedule. Consistency is key to leveraging your IBNS effectively.
  3. Reflecting on Progress: At the end of each week, spend a few minutes reflecting on the exercises you’ve tried. Consider the following questions:
  4. Adapting as Needed: If an exercise doesn’t resonate, adjust it or replace it with another. The goal is to create a practice that feels meaningful and sustainable.

Interest

Activities that naturally captivate your attention and bring joy are central to the pillar of interest. These exercises will help you identify and lean into what truly energizes you:

Interest Mapping: Reflect on activities that make you lose track of time. Write down moments when you felt completely immersed in what you were doing. Use this list to identify recurring themes, topics, or skills that consistently engage you.

  • Which activities on your list feel most exciting or energizing right now?
  • How can you incorporate one of these interests into your daily routine?

Passion Journaling: Keep a dedicated journal to document moments when you felt alive, excited, or deeply engaged. Explore what triggered these feelings and how they align with your current activities. Over time, these reflections will provide clarity about your core passions.

  • What patterns or themes emerge when you review your journal entries?
  • Are there any surprises in what brings you joy or energy?

Purpose Alignment: Evaluate how your current goals and daily routines align with your long-term aspirations and values. Identify gaps and adjust to ensure you’re spending time on what truly matters to you.

  • Which activities feel most aligned with your values and goals?
  • What changes can you make to bring more alignment into your daily life?

Novelty

Novelty sparks curiosity and keeps your brain engaged. These exercises encourage exploration and fresh perspectives:

Novelty Exploration: Challenge yourself to try something new each week. This could be a new hobby, visiting a new place, or experimenting with a different way of completing a task. Pay attention to how these experiences affect your energy and engagement.

  • What emotions did you notice when trying something new?
  • Did this experience spark any ideas or interests you want to explore further?

Daily Micro-Experiments: Dedicate 10-15 minutes a day to exploring something unfamiliar or intriguing. Experiment with a new app, read an article on a topic you know little about, or try a simple creative exercise.

  • What did you learn or discover during today’s micro-experiment?
  • How can this small exploration connect to larger goals or interests?

Curiosity Box: Create a jar or box filled with questions or topics you’re curious about. Pick one at random and spend time researching, reflecting, or experimenting with it each week.

  • What did you find most interesting about this week’s topic or question?
  • Did exploring this topic spark curiosity about anything else?

Challenge

Challenge fuels growth and keeps motivation alive. These exercises help you set and pursue goals that push your limits:

Challenge Goals: Define a goal that excites you but feels slightly out of reach. Break it into actionable steps, and celebrate small victories along the way to maintain motivation.

  • What progress have you made toward your goal this week?
  • How do you feel about the challenges you faced while working on this goal?

Stretch Projects: Take on a project that feels ambitious yet attainable. Embrace the learning curve and focus on the new insights and capabilities you gain.

  • What new skills or knowledge did you gain from this project?
  • How did you handle obstacles or setbacks during this stretch project?

Feedback Loop: Actively seek feedback on your efforts from peers or mentors. Use this input to refine your approach and grow from constructive insights.

  • What valuable insights did you gain from the feedback you received?
  • How will you incorporate this feedback into your future efforts?

Urgency

Urgency provides the momentum to take action. These exercises help you create a sense of focus and immediacy:

Urgency Planning: Break larger tasks into smaller, time-bound segments. Use timers or countdown clocks to create a sense of urgency for each segment, encouraging focus and progress.

  • How did creating a sense of urgency impact your ability to complete the task?
  • What adjustments can you make to improve this planning strategy?

Deadline Challenge: Set personal deadlines for tasks, treating them as non-negotiable. Hold yourself accountable to these timelines and reflect on how they help you stay on track.

  • What strategies helped you stick to your deadlines?
  • How did meeting deadlines affect your confidence and motivation?

Accountability Partnership: Partner with someone who can check in on your progress. This shared accountability can provide motivation and support.

  • How did your accountability partner help you stay on track?
  • What additional support or feedback would enhance this partnership?

Passion

Passion fuels intrinsic motivation and makes even challenging tasks feel meaningful. These exercises nurture your passions:

Creative Flow Sessions: Set aside time for activities that immerse you completely, like painting, writing, playing music, or crafting. Notice how these sessions recharge and inspire you.

  • What feelings or thoughts emerged during your creative flow sessions?
  • How can you create more opportunities for these immersive experiences?

Strength Spotting: Reflect on activities where you’ve naturally excelled. Identify the skills or strengths you used and consider how you can apply them in other areas of your life.

  • Which strengths or skills are you most proud of?
  • How can you use these strengths to enhance other areas of your life?

Inspiration Immersion: Surround yourself with books, podcasts, videos, or communities that fuel your passions and aspirations. Let these resources guide and energize your next steps.

  • What new ideas or inspiration did you gain from your immersion?
  • How can you integrate this inspiration into your daily life or goals?

By aligning your actions with the pillars of motivation, you can unlock the potential of your interest-based nervous system to enhance your focus, creativity, and resilience. These exercises are an invitation to explore, grow, and thrive in ways that feel authentically yours.

Part 1: Thank you for sharing this insightful piece! It's inspiring to see science and evolving to address neurodivergence and the unique challenges many of us face. Your approach highlights significant progress, and the solutions presented can indeed serve as helpful stepping stones. That said, I’d love to offer an additional perspective rooted in my work with The Weird Ones and the LifeSpider System?, which focuses on solving not just symptoms but addressing the root causes of challenges like these. While traditional solutions often work within a neurotypical framework, they can unintentionally fall short for those who thrive in unconventional ways. For instance, goal-setting often exacerbates frustration for neurodiverse individuals. Goals measure success against static markers that don’t account for our evolving passions and dynamic energies. Instead, LifeSpider System? introduces "Energy-Surfing", a method that aligns with one’s innate drives and intentions, creating fluidity and synchronicity in achieving goals without rigid constraints. This process shifts the focus from external expectations to?personal purpose which fostering authentic growth and resilience.
