Unlocking Whangārei: WSP and Locky Dock install 10 new free bike stations

At WSP, we are committed to revolutionising urban mobility so that it’s accessible, sustainable, and efficient for all. That’s why we’re honoured to be a partner with Locky Dock, Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading bike parking, charging, and wayfinding network, who are making waves in the world of cycling. This month, Locky Dock is set to enhance the cycling experience in Whangārei by providing 10 free, secure bike parking and charging stations – and this is just the beginning of a broader vision for New Zealand.

What is Locky Dock?

Imagine cycling around your local area, knowing your bike is safely parked - and if you’re riding an e-bike - that it's charging while you enjoy a local coffee or explore nearby shops. Now imagine if that service was free.

Locky Dock, the brain child of Cleve Cameron , Andrew Charlesworth , and Matt Weavers at Big Street Bikers , addresses a common barrier to cycling: the need for convenient, secure parking and charging. With its robust locking system and user-friendly e-bike charging stations, Locky Dock makes cycling more accessible and appealing to everyone, whether you ride an e-bike, ten speed, or BMX bike.

With WSP’s support and foundation partners Mercury NZ and oOh! Media, Locky Dock facilities are free to use, making sustainable transportation accessible to everyone. It’s a media-funded infrastructure model that delivers measurable impact.

WSP and Locky Dock Partner to Bring 10 New Cycling Stations to Whangārei

Like WSP, Locky Dock’s mission is about transforming urban mobility, reducing congestion, and promoting healthier lifestyles across our communities.

In addition to being a Locky Dock network partner, WSP has partnered with Locky Dock and Whangarei District Council to?install 10 cycling stations across Whangārei. With all stations set to be fully operational by early October 2024, this project marks a key milestone in creating more cycle-friendly neighbourhoods for our Whangārei whānau.

Our team worked closely with Locky Dock to ensure these stations were effectively integrated into the community, offering cyclists easy access to secure parking and charging options.

The addition of 10 new cycling stations could mark a significant boost for local businesses in Whangārei

Locky Dock does more than secure bikes; it breathes life into local economies. By placing these stations near local businesses, there is potential for increased foot traffic, as cyclists stopping to charge or park their e-bikes will have the chance to explore the vibrant offerings of Whangārei’s local shops and cafes.

And for e-bike users, the charging stations ensure cyclists can ride worry-free, eliminating concerns about running out of power mid-journey.

The new stations could lead to a reduction of 250,000 vehicles on Whangārei’s roads

The benefits of Locky Dock extend beyond convenience. “Ten Locky Docks are projected to deliver a staggering 250,000 fewer vehicle kilometres travelled each year, reducing traffic and improving air quality." That's not all - Locky Dock anticipate 88 tons of carbon emissions saved annually, equivalent to planting a significant number of trees. Last but not least, over the course of a year, 10 Locky Dock stations have an estimated $32 million net social benefit from improved health and wellbeing of the community.

Looking forward with Locky Dock

This initiative represents more than just infrastructure; it’s about reimagining urban living for a greener future. At WSP, we’re committed to driving this change and look forward to seeing the positive impact Locky Dock will have in Whangārei and beyond.
