Unlocking Telecom Network Value with TMF931 and Camara APIs
Since the introduction of 3G, telecom operators are continuously looking for new and innovative ways to monetize their network investments. The traditional communication services, even the data services, no longer effectively demonstrate the operators full value. The hope to boost end-user demand by introducing 5G technology did not meet expectations. As a result, operators are exploring new strategies to leverage their infrastructure, diversify their services, and introduce new capabilities to build a new partner ecosystem.
One approach involves exposing network functions to application developers and channel partners. This enhances third-party application capabilities and increases the demand for communication. This is where the GSMA Open Gateway initiative and Camara open source project with Linux Foundation become crucial.
Open Gateway APIs are interfaces exposed by telecom operators, allowing applications to seamlessly utilize network capabilities in various areas. These include fraud detection, mobile connectivity, value-added services (VAS), fixed connectivity, cloud and edge application demands, and payments. Open Gateway APIs enable developers to integrate these network functions into their applications, resulting in more robust features and greater value. By utilizing these enhanced applications, end users can experience improved services, leading to increased demand for communication networks.

To facilitate this integration, TM Forum published the Open Gateway Onboarding and Ordering Open API (TMF931) standard. This provided a structured and standardized way for onboarding both the applications and their developers to the telecom operators BSS amp; OSS systems, as well as ordering Open Gateway API products. TM Forum Open API standards ensure interoperability, security, and efficiency, making it easier for developers to harness network capabilities.
By leveraging Open Gateway APIs and standardizing the onboarding process, telecom operators can unlock new revenue streams andnbsp; fully realize their network investments potential. This approach not only benefits the operators but also empowers developers to create cutting-edge applications that meet the evolving needs of users. Embracing these technologies allows the telecom industry to advance towards a more connected, efficient, and innovative future, demonstrates the full value of their investments and drives growth across the ecosystem.
Although the Open Gateway Onboarding and Ordering Open API appears to have some gaps to align with other TM Forum Open APIs in terms of style and consistency in the standard, I believe that it is a good starting point for future enhancements and evolution.
