At the recent Data & AI Leaders Forum hosted by DAVINCE.AI and
tech.STARS Munich
, I had the privilege to share insights on "The Future of Human Talent: Bridging Human with Artificial Intelligence". Many thanks to
Robin Pilling
and
Paul Hammer
for organizing the engaging event!
Here's a recap of some key takeaways from my interview:
- Embracing Technological Change: AI is reshaping work, posing challenges for hiring across all sectors. The rapid pace of technological change demands adaptable and lifelong learners. ?? While Germany's rich legacy in engineering and the arts underscores its potential for innovation, and Germany's Hidden Champions have long been renowned for their excellence in producing exceptional products, traditional systems prioritize precision. To fully harness the potential of AI for continued innovation, it's crucial to foster, instead, a culture of experimentation without the fear of repercussions for setbacks.
- Adapting to Data Mesh: Data Mesh is emerging as the future of organizational structures. In short, Data Mesh decentralizes data architecture, reframes data ownership, and presents data as a product spreading responsibility and access to data throughout the organization. (Find more about it here in my previous edition.) Because Data Mesh organization emphasizes flexibility, constant learning, and individual responsibility, I believe flexibility, adaptability, and collaboration will make data & AI leaders.
- Navigating Talent Challenges: Over 40% of workers’ core skills will change in the next five years, according to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023. In addition, we need to be hiring people throughout the company - not just tech talent - who can learn because we are moving toward Data Mesh organizations. The challenge is hiring for these skills when the labor market is not full of adaptable and flexible candidates.
- Cultivating a Learning Culture: Compassion and adaptability are the duty of the leaders of today, from teachers to business leaders. The education system and our continued business trainings within companies must evolve to foster flexibility and adaptability, rewarding experimentation, curiosity and innovation. Education has to reward for trying, not just for producing perfect results. We have to replace the fear with trust, and encourage experimenting without penalties for failure.
- More Flexibility inside the Organization: Companies can promote flexibility by incentivizing innovation, fostering anti-hierarchy cultures, and being open to hiring foreign talent. For example, currently it's common to reward efficiencies, but that's based on a 90s mindset. Instead, we can rethink incentives and set a goal of 20% innovation in an employee's job – and reward based on reaching that goal. We can also attract foreign talent by working toward lower restrictions and building more inclusive, diverse company cultures.
- More Flexibility externally with Hiring as a Service (HaaS): Providing the right pool of talent to the right Hiring Manager at the right time is Hiring as a Service. (Find more about HaaS in this previous edition.) Whether reducing staff in a reorg/reskilling or increasing staff for an urgent project, HaaS offers an effective model for deploying AI strategies and fostering flexibility within large organizations.
- Leading with Compassion and Adaptability: I strongly believe that enterprise leaders must embrace flexibility, compassion, and adaptability to bridge the gap between human and artificial intelligence effectively. We are all artists; we each need to become creators today - changing the way we work personally and the way our organizations work and think as well.
Talking with others at the Forum, I could hear how many believe as I do that trust and a learning culture are vital for success. While hierarchical leaders fear unproductive employees, I have total belief that people take pride in what they do, and will perform when trusted!
