The effects of pollution are particularly concentrated in communities near fossil fuel power plants. Around 32 million people in the US live within three miles of a peaker plant, which typically runs on gas during peak energy demand events, such as during the solar eclipse.?

Solar panels can only generate electricity when the sun is shining, making it necessary to find alternative energy sources during periods of low solar availability. Battery storage has seen significant growth in the US, from 0.6 GW during the last solar eclipse (2017) to 15.4 GW today. However, more energy storage is still needed to ensure a reliable supply of electricity.?
To compensate for the loss in solar energy during the eclipse, pumped hydropower storage was utilized, accounting for 42 percent of the shortfall. This method involves pumping water from a lower elevation to a higher elevation and then utilizing the flow through a turbine to generate electricity. This system functions as a large-scale battery, minimizing the impact on air quality and climate due to the eclipse.?
The solar eclipse served as a test of the US's preparedness to meet the challenge of ramping up renewable energy generation and storage capacity. It highlighted the need to prioritize clean energy sources and reduce reliance on dirty sources.
