Laughter has been a timeless and universal way for humans to connect and signal that everything's good, even before we could articulate it. It's not just reserved for friends and family but is equally vital with colleagues as we shape our teams, cultivate a winning culture, and establish our leadership brand.
In a Harvard Business Review article by Betty-Ann Heggie, 'The Benefits of Laughing in the Office,' she highlights the importance of not shying away from laughter at work and that studies show that humor can alleviate stress, not just mentally but also triggering positive physical changes in the body.
Also, according to research done by institutions including Wharton, MIT, and London Business School, have found that for every laugh brings with it a host of business benefits. For example, it relieves stress and boredom, it boosts engagement and well-being, and boosts creativity and collaboration but also analytic precision and productivity.
Moreover, laughter isn't just good for the soul; it's good for our health. Harvard Medical School's Professor Scott Edwards emphasizes the immune-boosting and stress-reducing effects, reducing the risk of heart-related issues.
This is backed up by research conducted by my own organization, the Center for Creative Leadership, found that fostering a sense of warmth, humor, and putting people at ease is among the most crucial leadership competencies for individuals in positions of leadership.
Therefore, leaders who are aspiring to foster a winning culture must embracing humor -? it’s a no-brainer! Therefore, it should not come as a surprise that in our office, we've integrated humor by sharing jokes at our weekly Sprint meetings for the past four years. It's become a ritual, an integral part of our everyday interactions, fostering not just camaraderie but also a competitive yet light-hearted spirit.
However, I'm left wondering why some people, leaders in particular, steer clear of humor... Perhaps it's the discomfort or fear of crossing boundaries. While it's understandable to tread carefully, avoiding the benefits of humor is akin to skipping healthy food in the office for fear of choking on an apple.
As a leader managing a diverse team of 14 nationalities, I believe playing it safe isn't the path to progress. Stepping out of our comfort zones, even if it means the occasional misstep with a joke, is part of being human. What matters most is how we handle it—striving for appropriateness, timing, and owning up to mistakes if needed (not just when telling jokes by the way!).
Ask yourself, who would you prefer to work with? Someone who brings humor to make work more enjoyable, even if not flawless every time? Or someone avoiding the risk altogether? In my book, the former adds a spark to the workplace that far outweighs any occasional misfires.
I know what I want!

See, I love my team – besides them being highly competent, ambitious and? hardworking, they're all about funny stories, random jokes, and the occasional odd comment. The best bosses? The ones who crack jokes and bring out the fun side of the crew. Done with respect, I'm convinced a good laugh at work is a major win. Trust me, from personal experience, the benefits totally beat any possible drawbacks.
Thank you for your time and I hope you found it interesting. Hopefully, you’ll try stepping out of your comfort zone too based on our experience. Feel free to share a comment with your perspective…….
Regards,
Casper
I guess, I need to finish off with a joke now don’t I? Here’s one I grabbed of the internet:
This guy goes to the doctor and says, "Doc, I can't stop singing certain songs. All morning I've been humming 'The Green, Green Grass Of Home.' Yesterday it was, 'Delilah.' Last week I sang 'What's New Pussycat?' at least 100 times! What's wrong with me?"
The Doctor says, "Sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome to me."
The man says, "Never heard of that. Is it common?"
Doc says, "It's not unusual."

9 个月Awesome, Casper Hammer. Laughter gives life to the environment, and I guess 'why some people, leaders in particular, steer clear of humor' could be to look intellectual. No poor small talk...

9 个月Thank you Casper . Jokes unarm egos and make everyone feel a little more human . I love the idea of being a leader that takes the need of the team seriously than taking oneself seriously. Glad to be a part of the team that laughs celebrates and encourages !!
