Unlocking Success: 5 Reasons Why Facing a Bump (or Several!) in Your Journey is Essential for Growth

I often read articles like the above, and I wonder “Really? Is that true? I have a friend who just made it in his first company, and it was instantly successful”.

I realise it’s because I was looking at things from a distance rather than daily. On the day-to-day, so many challenges take place. We often struggle with product acceptance, but we innovate and tweak along the way until we get product fit. Few people get everything right whether the first time around or at any time at all.

So why is facing a road bump so important?

Here are five compelling reasons why embracing challenge is an integral part of the path to success.

1. Grit Building

I like to quote one of my favourite Disney movies here Mulan. “The flower that blooms in adversity is the most beautiful and rarest at all”.

With adversity comes the possibility of facing setbacks, and I truly believe that the amount of adversity we can endure is trained like a muscle. The more of it we face, the easier it becomes for us to stand up to it. And with adversity, comes the possibility of failure. The only way we can avoid failure is if we avoid any form of adversity. If that happens, we’ll never be successful, and we’ll likely end up being soft like a pillow.

2. Learning Opportunities

When speaking about this topic, most people neglect the most important part – the learning opportunity behind your struggles.

I once had a close friend confide in me that he invested in a friend, and the investment failed. The lesson he walked away with was “Never invest in friends.” I told him that if the lesson he is taking away from this is that, then he had not learned anything because, let's face it, even Eduardo Saverin invested in Mark Zuckerberg, and he did very well financially, right? Even if they are no longer friends.

The deeper lesson that could have been learned is why it failed. Was it a bet on the wrong person? What red flags did this person show in hindsight? What behaviour did he exhibit that we know now, we should avoid next time?

Every failure is a disguised opportunity to learn. It's a chance to dissect what went wrong, analyse our strategies, and chart a more informed course forward. In fact, failure is the ultimate teacher, offering profound insights that textbooks and classrooms cannot match. But we have to take the right lessons from it. Not the most convenient.

3. Character Development

Going through struggles shapes our character. It unveils our true grit and determination, revealing the depths of our inner strength. It's during these trying times we discover who we are and what we're genuinely capable of achieving. Our character evolves, becoming more resilient, adaptable, and tenacious.

Stress from this force us to self-reflect and be honest about our strengths and weaknesses. While optimism helps us push our boundaries, failure helps us recognise our limitations, and both are just as important.

4. Humility and Empathy

My father always told me that we have to be humble to the people we see on the way up in our lives because these are the same people, we will see on our way down.

Failing humbles us. It reminds us that we are all humans prone to errors and misjudgements. This newfound humility fosters empathy, making us better leaders and more compassionate team members. It fosters a work environment where people are understood, supported, and empowered. Most importantly, though, it reminds us that sometimes the reason for our success is luck, and it’s often not because we are better than everyone else.

5. Innovation and Adaptation

When old methods and approaches crumble under the weight of challenges and struggles, it compels us to innovate and adapt. It's often through the ashes of our failed attempts that groundbreaking ideas and solutions emerge.

So, the next time you find yourself face-to-face with a setback, remember this: it's not the end of your journey; it's a transformative detour on your path to success. Embrace it, learn from it, and use it as a stepping stone toward your goals. Success, more often than not, is just a series of setbacks leading you in the right direction.

In closing, reflect on the most valuable lessons from your past. Share your insights and experiences with others, for it is through these shared stories that we collectively grow and prosper. Remember, failure is not the end; it's the beginning of something greater. Embrace it, for it's an indispensable companion on the journey to success.
