Unlocking the Strategic Value of Resistance in Business

In the dynamic realm of business leadership, the concept of resistance has evolved from a notion I would often disregard to a principle that now informs my strategic outlook and my everyday interactions. Early in my career as an HR leader, I approached resistance with a different perspective. However, a pivotal shift occurred during my participation in Goodyear Tire & Rubber's Global Leadership Development Program, held in Belgium. This transformative experience introduced me to the power of "polarity management," an approach offering insights and tools for addressing seemingly insurmountable challenges. Among its core tenets, a profound principle emerged: "there is wisdom in resistance."

It has since become an enduring principle, shaping my daily interactions, and guiding my leadership style. Embracing the wisdom in resistance has empowered me to elevate my active listening skills, thereby fostering a culture of attentive engagement.? Am I perfect, far from it, but I know that I am a much better HR leader for continuing to consider this principle in my daily interactions.

The notion of "wisdom in resistance" manifests in a multitude of ways, and the following exemplify what I believe are its most compelling positive outcomes within a business context:

  2. Informed Change: While innovation is crucial, valuable insights often reside in the voices of those who have witnessed past changes falter. Acknowledging and analyzing resistance can offer a roadmap for steering new initiatives toward success while avoiding past pitfalls.
  3. Communication Catalyst: Resistance to poor communication or suboptimal transparency can foster a culture of candid dialogue and mutual respect. This, in turn, enhances collaboration and facilitates informed decision-making.
