Unlocking the Secrets to Seamless and Cost-Effective Migrations to AWS

Unlocking the Secrets to Seamless and Cost-Effective Migrations to AWS

Is 'Lift and Shift' Still the Go-To Choice for Customers?

What is the best way to migrate to AWS? This is a question we get from customers all the time. The answer - it depends. Lift and shift is the most common migration approach we see customers taking but it is definitely NOT the only approach. This year we’ve seen an increased focus on cloud-native application development and modernization, mainly due to cost considerations. However, there are still many scenarios where a lift and shift approach makes the most sense.

Lift and shift refers to the process of moving an application from an on-premises environment to the cloud without making significant changes to the application itself. This approach can be useful when a company wants to quickly move its applications to the cloud without having to redesign or re-architect them. It is, however, the most expensive migration strategy. You’ve probably heard about customers taking this approach only to be shocked when their AWS bills start to arrive. If you’re not properly scoping requirements, leveraging appropriate AWS services and simply replicating your on-prem environment (Lift and Shift), you may also experience sticker shock.

Why AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) is Your Best Route to the Cloud?

Fortunately, you can prevent ending up in such a situation. AWS is customer obsessed (believe it) and they offer several programs designed to avoid this scenario. One of the programs AWS offers is called the Migration Acceleration Program (aka MAP). This program consists of three stages - Assess, Mobilize, and Migrate & Modernize and is delivered by an approved AWS Consulting Partner with a Migration Competency. The AWS MAP not only provides a solid migration methodology, but it also provides customer funding (yes, AWS provides $) at each stage of the migration process. I told you they are truly customer obsessed.

The most critical of the stages (in my opinion) is the Assess Phase. In this phase, an AWS Consulting Partner will perform a Migration Readiness Assessment (MRA). The MRA will provide insight into your business’s current state and give you a clear picture of?

  • What you will migrate
  • ?A business case for migration
  • Total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis for migration.

If the MRA is done correctly, you should never be surprised with your AWS bill post-migration; no sticker shock. The MRA will also help you define the appropriate migration strategy. Lift and Shift may be the easiest but it may not be the best for your business. For example, if an application is not architected for the cloud, it may not perform optimally after migration. In these cases, it may be more appropriate to consider modernization or refactoring the application to take full advantage of cloud-native capabilities.
