When it comes to job interviews, most people believe it’s all about proving you meet every single qualification listed in the job posting. You feel the pressure to be perfect, ticking every box and showcasing an ideal background. But after years of experience in the recruiting world, I’ve learned an incredibly valuable lesson that shifted my entire approach to hiring: perfection is overrated. As recruiters, we don’t expect perfection. What we truly value is something far more powerful—authenticity, self-assurance, and growth potential. And here's the good news: this can be your secret weapon to stand out from the crowd and land the job you deserve.
The Truth About What Recruiters Look for
I used to obsess over qualifications, checking if each candidate met the exact criteria listed in the job posting. But over time, I came to realize that most jobs can be taught, especially if you have the right attitude and a strong foundation. In fact, what hiring managers are really looking for is much more about who you are as a person, your potential, and how well you can connect with them. Passion, commitment to growth, and the ability to learn are what set great candidates apart from the rest (Charbonneau, Reed, & Powell, 2021).
It’s Not About Being Perfect—It’s About Being Real
No one expects you to have every skill or qualification listed in the job description. I can tell you from experience as both a recruiter and a hiring manager—the most memorable candidates weren’t always the ones with the most experience. The candidates who stood out were those who showed up as their authentic selves. They didn’t hide behind jargon or pretend to be something they weren’t. They owned their story. They communicated their value with confidence. They showed they were ready to grow with the role and the company. And that’s what we wanted to see.
Confidence, not arrogance, is what attracts recruiters. Even if you don’t have every qualification listed, the most important thing is to communicate what you do bring to the table. Self-assurance isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being comfortable with your own value and communicating it clearly. When you confidently explain what you’ve accomplished, you instantly show that you know what you’re capable of, and that makes a huge impact (Charbonneau, Reed, & Powell, 2021).
This is where the magic happens—clear communication can make the difference between being considered for a role and being passed over. If you can articulate your strengths and the impact you’ve made in previous roles, you’re already setting yourself apart from the competition.
2. A Growth Mindset Over a Perfect Resume
A growth mindset is your best friend when applying for jobs. You don’t have to be perfect, and you certainly don’t need to have checked off every box on the job description. What recruiters are really looking for is a candidate who can demonstrate adaptability, resilience, and a willingness to learn. If you’ve had varied experiences that didn’t align perfectly with the job description, focus on how you learned, adapted, and grew in those situations. Your ability to learn on the job and grow within a role is invaluable. When you show recruiters that you are excited to take on new challenges and keep developing, it sends a clear message that you are the type of person who can succeed in any role (Schmitz‐Wilhelmy & Truxillo, 2024).

So many candidates downplay their achievements during interviews. Maybe it’s the fear of coming across as bragging, or maybe it’s not wanting to seem too confident. But here’s the deal—you have to own your accomplishments. The truth is, most people don’t give themselves enough credit for the impact they’ve made. And as a recruiter, I’ll tell you that underestimating your value is a huge missed opportunity. When you talk about your achievements, be specific. Talk about the impact you’ve made and the measurable outcomes you’ve delivered. Saying, “I led a team of 10 people and increased efficiency by 20%” is far more powerful than saying, “I managed a team.” The more specific you are about the impact of your work, the clearer it becomes that you understand your worth (Schmitz‐Wilhelmy & Truxillo, 2024).

The truth is, recruiters don’t have time to dig for your value. You have to present it with confidence. But here’s the key: that confidence doesn’t come from pretending to be perfect or faking it. It comes from being real. It comes from embracing your authenticity, owning your story, and confidently communicating what makes you unique.
When you show up to an interview as your authentic self, you’re not just increasing your chances of getting hired—you’re positioning yourself to find a company that aligns with who you are. It’s not about fitting into a mold or pretending to be perfect—it’s about owning your worth, and showing the hiring manager why you are the best fit for the team.
