Unlocking the Power of Your Emotions

Unlocking the Power of Your Emotions

How do you feel when you shut down your emotions??

Of course, that’s an ironic question because I just suggested you get in touch with your feelings when you’re avoiding feeling them.?

We all know what it's like to shut down our feelings. There have been times in my life when I shut down different emotions?because I didn’t feel safe expressing them. The problem was when I made that choice to not feel,?they?weren't the only emotions?that my psyche and my body?shut down.

Because I was unwilling to feel some emotions that I was afraid to experience?or that made me feel too vulnerable, I was closed off to other emotions I needed to feel. So?I became shut off from who I fully was as a person, and as an artist.?

I know this sounds crazy but it was super painful not to feel my emotions fully.

This?emotional shutdown happens to everyone. Almost all of us are muting our feelings because we’re simply too scared to feel them fully. But it has become crucial that we all unlock and express our feelings. It’s time for your “FEELING VOICE" to be heard. Too much is at stake for all of us when we don’t express our feelings.?When we don’t allow ourselves to accept and feel our emotion we will experience consequences in our life and in our work. Trauma expert and physician Dr. Gabor Mate has studied this extensively and here's what he found...

“When you shut down emotion, you’re also affecting your immune system and your nervous system. So the repression of emotion, which is a survival strategy,?then becomes a source of physiological illness later on.”

The ability to express emotions and be vulnerable is important for everyone and it is crucial for leaders, coaches, and creatives because it allows us to connect with others on a deeper level, build trust, and inspire empathy.

Leaders and coaches who are able to express their emotions and vulnerabilities are seen as more authentic and relatable, which helps them to build strong relationships with their teams and their clients. It’s possible then to create a culture of openness and trust, which is essential for innovation and creativity.

But if you're a performer, assessing your full emotional range is extremely important. Creatives who are able to fully express their emotions and vulnerabilities through their work are able to connect with their audience on a deeper level, and then the audience experiences a more emotional and personal response. And we all want to create more meaningful and impactful art that resonates with people on a profound level.

Why DO We Shut Down Our Feelings, Our Emotions?

When you were a child do you remember how easy it was to express your feelings? Do you remember that when you were sad you cried, angry you screamed and when you were happy you laughed? Your body responded instantly and naturally to what you were feeling, there was no problem.

Do you remember the first time your parent, sibling, teacher, or another adult told you to stop crying? Or when they told you to stop getting mad? I know I do. My mother did not want me to be sad – ever. So I learned to suppress my sad feelings. She used to tell me that I was the happiest child and so easy to take care of. It took a long time for me to allow myself to feel deeply sad when I was experiencing loss in my life.?

I’ve stopped closing down those feelings. I’ve found by embracing the sadness that I sometimes feel, then the joy I experience is even fuller. By safely embracing the feelings of anger I experience when I feel pissed off, I can open up and release those feelings and then act from a place of power and safety.?

There is a way to unlock our emotions and express them appropriately.?There is a way to free them up so we can be empowered by expressing them, both in our work and in our personal lives. Like so much of our life, accepting and freely expressing our feelings is a journey, a process.

For the last 10 years, I have been developing? The Emotional?Power and Freedom Process?that safely allows my acting, singing clients and performers to drop down into their bodies where the emotions truly live.?

Before they embraced this process they all kept telling me the same things…

  • I’ve tried many different ways to get my feelings going, but I’m still having problems waking up my emotions
  • I can’t FULLY feel some of my emotions. This “shut down” happens in my acting and art and also in my life.

As we worked together, the results of exploring? The Emotional?Power and Freedom Process?have been astounding. Every student was feeling something totally authentic, even the beginning students.

And here is the best part. My students have reported that they are feeling more in their everyday lives.

When I share this process with coaches, entrepreneurs, and leaders they are getting the same results too.

Now more than ever the world needs to hear your true voice and experience what you have to give, because your voice matters. In order to share your voice we can't do it halfway, and that means accepting our talents, our positive needs and desires, and our feelings.

In the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing more about? The Emotional?Power and Freedom Process?and I'll be covering a few of these topics:

  • The Connection Between Our Voice and Our Emotions
  • The Science of Emotions
  • The Benefits of Emotional Expression & Embracing Vulnerability
