Introduction
Welcome to this week's Musings from a Book Queen! Today, I’m discussing leadership reading and addressing a frequently asked question: "When you read strategically, don't you miss out on the context and not fully understand what you're reading?"
Many people may have this concern when they first learn about leadership reading. However, with practice and the right techniques, leadership reading actually helps you gain a deeper understanding of what you read. So let's dive in and explore this topic further. Leadership reading is reading to learn what you need to know. You read the sections of a nonfiction book that apply to you.
The Benefits of Leadership Reading
Leadership reading is a powerful tool that helps you save time and improve your comprehension of the material you're reading. To extract key insights and ideas from a text without getting stuck in unimportant details, it's important to read strategically and focus on the most significant information. Here are some benefits of strategic reading:
Time saving: One of the main advantages of leadership reading is it saves you a lot of time. By skipping irrelevant or non-salient information, you read more efficiently and get through a text much faster.
Improved comprehension: Reading strategically helps you improve your comprehension of a text. By focusing on the most important information, you gain a deeper understanding of the material and remember more of what you've read.
Better retention: When you read strategically, you're more likely to remember the information that's most important. This helps you remember the key concepts and ideas long after you've finished reading.
Here are some examples of how you can use leadership reading in different contexts:
In business, leadership reading helps you quickly extract the key insights from books, reports, articles, and other documents that you need to make informed decisions.
In academic settings, leadership reading helps you read through textbooks, research papers, and other course materials more effectively.
In personal reading, leadership reading helps you get through books and articles faster and still gain a deep understanding of the material.
Leadership reading is a valuable skill you can apply in many contexts. Whether you're reading for professional, academic, or personal reasons, leadership reading helps you save time and improves your comprehension of the material.
Addressing Concerns about Context
It's natural for some readers to worry about missing important context when they read strategically. However, with practice, the more you develop the skills to identify and fill any gaps in your understanding.
To those who may have concerns, I’d like to reassure you that the goal of leadership reading is not to skip the context entirely. But to identify the most important information that will help you understand the text better. Although reading strategically may cause missed context, improving your ability to identify gaps will help fill them.

One effective way to address any gaps in understanding is to go back a few pages to see what you may have missed. Only do this if you feel you’re missing something. This is a useful strategy that many readers have found helpful.?
If you come across a section that you feel requires further exploration, go back and read the preceding paragraphs. This helps you better understand the context and the connections between the different parts of the text.
The Role of Non-Salient Text
Only a small percentage of the words on a page carry meaning. Research has shown that only four to 11 percent of the words on a page are truly salient, meaning that they are critical for understanding the text. The remaining 89% to 96% of the text is connected to the salient information, but not necessarily crucial for comprehension.
While this may seem counterintuitive, it's important to remember that this non-salient text still has a role to play in the text. It provides context, background information, and helps to connect different parts of the text together. However, it's unnecessary to read every single word to gain a full understanding of the material.
To save time and fully understand the material, focus on the important information and skip the rest. This is one of the key advantages of leadership reading. And it's a technique that many successful readers use to manage their time and improve their comprehension.
