Unlocking the Power of Industry Domain Learning: A Crucial Aspect for Career Growth

After more than 15 years of experience in the IT field, I would like to emphasize the importance of carefully selecting the industry you work in. It's essential to consider this aspect when embarking on a job search.

It's no secret that there are industries that are more financially rewarding, interesting, altruistic, and complex, among other qualities. This is a factor you should not overlook.

Once you've made a decision that aligns with your preferences, seize the opportunity and ensure you immerse yourself in learning about that particular domain, especially if it's a new one for you.

Throughout my career, I have been involved in three major industries: Entertainment, E-commerce, and Logistics. My attraction was not solely based on evaluating the industry, but rather driven by the technical and management challenges it presented. However, spurred by curiosity, I made a concerted effort to gain insights into each industry.

As I've grown older, I've made a conscious decision to invest more energy and time in delving deeper into industry knowledge, and the benefits have been substantial. Here are some key findings:

  1. Learning is Always Enjoyable: Engaging in continuous learning is a source of enjoyment.
  2. Reduced Ramp-Up Time: Studying the industry significantly shortens your ramp-up time when tackling new projects.
  3. Enhanced Authority: You can speak with more authority and actively contribute to shaping the product.
  4. Holistic Contribution: Your contributions extend beyond a technical perspective.
  5. Better Understanding of Company Vision: A deeper understanding of the industry leads to a clearer grasp of the company's vision.
  6. Industry Recognition: You enhance your profile within the industry, contributing not only to a specific company but to the industry as a whole.

Engineers possess a logical thinking style that non-engineers may lack. This valuable asset is applicable to various thinking processes, from marketing to HR. Learning about the industry is the pathway to becoming a key player acknowledged by the entire industry.
