Unlocking the Power of Flow: Breaking Free from the Multitasking Myth
Hello and welcome to this week's newsletter. I'm Reena Jha, an Executive Coach and Business Psychologist. Today, I want to explore something that profoundly influences productivity, creativity, and happiness—the state of flow. In today's fast-paced world, most people struggle with constant interruptions and the illusion of multitasking.
The Myth of Multitasking
Many believe multitasking—juggling tasks, planning every minute, and rushing through life—gets them closer to their goals. But science disagrees.
Research confirms that true multitasking is a myth because our brains cannot deeply focus on more than one cognitively demanding task at a time. While you can do simple activities simultaneously—like making a drink during a meeting or walking while listening to a podcast—when it comes to complex tasks requiring focus, such as replying to emails while participating in a meeting, your attention suffers.
?? You lose focus, shifting between tasks.
?? You make mistakes, adding extra work to fix them.
?? Your brain enters a scattered state, leading to constant distraction.
Over time, this not only affects productivity but also takes a toll on your mental clarity and well-being. The bottom line? Multitasking is neither efficient nor healthy.
Of course, there is a concept called slow-motion multitasking, which some highly successful individuals practice—but that's a discussion for another day.
Instead of constantly rushing, taking a step back can actually propel you forward faster. That's where the state of flowcomes in.
What Is Flow, and Why Does It Matter?
One of the most significant influences in my work is Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the renowned psychologist behind the concept of "flow." His work on happiness and creativity has shaped how we understand peak performance and fulfilment.
In his seminal book Flow, he defines it as:
?? A highly focused mental state conducive to productivity.
?? A state of deep concentration and absorption in an activity.
?? A place where people feel happiest, engaged, and at their best.
?? A moment where nothing else seems to matter—only the task at hand.

Simply put, flow is the intersection where your skills and challenges align perfectly.
? If your skills outweigh your challenges, you may feel bored, stuck, or uninspired.
? If your challenges exceed your skills, you may feel overwhelmed, stressed, or discouraged.
Most people operate in one of these imbalances, directly impacting their happiness, motivation, and progress.
But when your skills and challenges are in harmony, you enter a flow state—where work becomes effortless, creativity soars and fulfilment takes over.
The Joy of Flow: A Path to Happiness & Creativity
Even if you aren't at the peak of success yet, the joy, satisfaction, and deep contentment from being in a flow state are immeasurable.
?? You feel progress, movement, and purpose.
?? You enjoy your work instead of enduring it.
?? Stress becomes irrelevant because you're fully immersed in the present moment.
For those constantly struggling with Stress, distractions, or a sense of stagnation—take a moment to reflect:
?? Do you need to enhance your skills?
OR
?? Do you need to seek more enormous challenges?
Self-awareness is the first step to realigning with your true potential.
Daily Affirmation
I encourage you to take a pause, breathe, and reflect on how you can invite more flow into your life. And as you do, here's an affirmation to ground you in purpose and enthusiasm—ideally practised after meditation or breathwork:
?? "Today is a glorious day, and I will live it with excellence, boundless enthusiasm, and limitless integrity—true to my vision, with a heart full of love."
Thank you for engaging!

1 个月Brilliant Reena, the problem with me is sometimes I get so into the flow, my husband tries to talk to me and I don't even hear him ?? but I have also fallen foul to multitasking and that really does cause you to lose focus and then spend time trying to get back on track.
