In today's data-driven world, effective data governance and cataloging tools are essential for managing, securing, and deriving insights from your enterprise data assets. While cloud giants like Azure, AWS, and Google offer their native solutions, many organizations are turning to third-party COTS alternatives to provide a “best in breed” solution for their needs. Here are six reasons why I personally feel these third-party solutions often outshine the native cloud DG/DC offerings:
1. Vendor Neutrality: Third-party COTS tools are vendor-agnostic, providing the flexibility to manage data across multi-cloud and on-premises environments. If this functionality is present it sometimes requires excessive integrations to be developed for multi-cloud solutions to be truly integrated within the cloud platform solutions/services. This neutrality prevents vendor lock-in and offers a broader choice in technology.
2. Comprehensive Features: COTS solutions typically offer a wider array of features, including advanced metadata management, data lineage, data quality, and governance controls, enabling organizations to implement more robust data governance strategies. Right now, it is of my opinion that the cloud platform services just are not quite “there”.
3. Customization and Integration: COTS solutions provide greater customization and integration options, allowing organizations to tailor their data governance and cataloging to specific needs and seamlessly integrate with existing tools and workflows. Beyond data store options I personally do not feel that the service integration between platforms is necessarily “easy” to implement.
4. Data Catalog Federation: These solutions often support catalog federation, enabling users to discover and search for data across multiple cloud platforms, on-premises systems, and third-party data sources, leading to more efficient data discovery.

5. Data Governance Maturity: Many third-party COTS tools have a more extensive track record and mature data governance features compared to their cloud-native counterparts, offering a tried-and-tested approach to governance. Even as of this article there are DG/DC tools for cloud platform vendors that are still under “preview”.
6. Vendor Lock-In Mitigation: By choosing third-party COTS tools, organizations can mitigate the risk of vendor lock-in, ensuring data and applications can be more easily migrated between cloud providers or on-premises environments.
Remember, while Azure, AWS, and Google offer powerful data governance and cataloging tools, third-party COTS solutions often provide a more flexible, feature-rich, and vendor-agnostic approach to data management. When selecting a data governance solution, it's essential to consider your organization's unique needs, future goals, and the capabilities offered by third-party tools to make an informed decision that empowers your data strategy. #DataGovernance #DataCataloging #COTS #CloudComputing

1 年Absolutely agree with you! I believe that not all decisions for tools have the luxury of time or required expertise, hence choosing the native solutions feels like a “safe bet”. Additionally there are so many new DG tools popping up here and there with niche benefits, that I can easily seeing decision makers getting to choice overload. I guess as with any tool selection, we should start with clear requirements so we can assess different tools with a balance scorecard like approach to be close to a fact based decision. Thanks for sharing this point of view! And thanks to Keely Hollahan for letting me be part of this!
