Unlocking the Power of AI Image Editing: Diving into DALL·E's New Editor Interface

Late last night, while working on rebuilding my portfolio in Notion, I was using DALL·E (openAI's tool that generates images from text descriptions) to create supporting images. When I clicked on one of them to get a closer look, I was presented with a tooltip showing off a new set of options for selecting and editing the image. This was my first encounter with OpenAI's latest update to DALL·E: the editor interface (and the moment I knew I wasn't going to be getting much sleep).
So, what can this new editor do? In a few words, it allows you to make precise adjustments to the images you generate with DALL·E.?
Previously, making changes to a specific element of an image required going through the frustrating and unpredictable process of regenerating the entire image and hoping for the best. This often led to a series of increasingly ridiculous images, as DALL·E tried to interpret the refined prompts.
With the DALL·E editor, you can select specific areas of an image and ask the AI to regenerate or alter just those sections. This is called "inpainting," and it's perfect for making detailed adjustments or removing unwanted elements. Check out the before and after images below to see what I mean.
In the "before" image, DALL·E had added some nonsensical text to the image, which I was able to remove using the inpainting feature. The "after" image is clean and text-free, just like I wanted.
In addition to inpainting, the editor offers "outpainting," which enables you to expand the image beyond its original boundaries. By extending the canvas in any direction, DALL·E fills in the extra space with content that matches the style and context of your original image. This feature opens up new possibilities for creating expansive and immersive visuals. Imagine being able to take a generated image of a character and expand the canvas to create an entire scene around them, complete with background elements and additional objects that seamlessly blend with the original image.

Inpainting and Outpainting are probably best known from Adobe Photoshop's Generative Fill and Generative Expand which have been featured in some incredible ads over the last year. However, the DALL·E editor brings these powerful features to a wider audience, making them accessible to anyone with an OpenAI account.
The editor also includes other cool features like creating variations of an image, applying style transfers, removing or altering text, and drawing directly onto the canvas to guide the AI. The variations feature is particularly useful when you like the general concept of an image but want to explore different takes on the same idea. Style transfer allows you to apply the aesthetic of one image to the content of another, creating unique visual mash-ups.
I've been playing around with the DALL·E editor, and I'm blown away. It's a game-changer for anyone who wants to create custom images for their projects, whether you're a marketer, designer, or just someone who enjoys experimenting with AI.?
