As business owners and leaders, we've all faced the challenge of managing underperforming employees. It's a tough situation that can have a significant impact on the productivity and morale of the entire team. In this article, I want to share my personal journey and the strategies I've implemented to address this issue head-on.
At Vivacity Coaching and Consulting, I experienced firsthand the negative effects of holding on to underperforming employees. It not only affected the team dynamics but also hindered our overall business growth. It was a turning point for me when I realised that I needed to take decisive action to rectify the situation and build a high-performing team.
One of the key strategies I embraced was evaluating our team's alignment with our company values. I recognised the importance of ensuring that each team member shared our vision and ethos. By making necessary adjustments and prioritising values alignment in our hiring process, we were able to foster a more cohesive and motivated team.
Another powerful strategy that I implemented was the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) People Component. Inspired by Gino Wickman's book "Traction," I incorporated EOS tools and quarterly reviews to ensure that the right people were in the right seats. This approach enabled us to identify areas for improvement, provide clarity in roles and responsibilities, and empower our team members to excel.
Creating a performance management system was also crucial in our journey to managing underperforming employees. We developed clear expectations, provided regular feedback, and offered ongoing development opportunities to support their growth. This approach helped us address underperformance promptly and provided a path for improvement.
Additionally, I learned the value of hiring slow and firing fast. It's important to recognise when someone is not the right fit for the team and take decisive action. By addressing underperformance promptly and decisively, we created an environment that rewarded excellence and motivated our team members to perform at their best.
Lastly, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and learning played a pivotal role in transforming our team dynamics. Encouraging personal growth, providing professional development opportunities, and embracing a mindset of learning allowed us to unlock the full potential of each team member.
