Unlocking Potential: The Transformative Power of Cultivating Leaders

Last week, I had the privilege of hearing 14 fabulous people deliver their final presentations on the projects they completed—and the growth and development they experienced—after completing one of our 6-month development programs.

At the end of the ceremony, as I stood in front of the participants and their leaders and was too overwhelmed with emotion to say a word, I saw 27 pairs of eyes looking back at me with such compassion as if to say, “Take your time. We know the feeling!”

As I sat there and listened to presentations, I was of course elated at the accelerated business results the participants had delivered. What got me all choked up, however, was hearing them talk about and demonstrate the personal transformation they had experienced, both individually and as a community. Seeing the sincere gestures of appreciation toward each other and the banter and camaraderie that simply didn’t exist a few short months ago, the offers of help and support and the genuine interest in what everyone had to say is what literally had me—and a few others—fighting back tears of joy as we sat back and listened.

This is a feeling that I have grown accustomed to throughout my career, being fortunate enough to have experienced it so often that it’s become familiar. To those of you who have never had the pleasure of witnessing dramatic personal transformation firsthand, the only way I can describe it is “awe-inspiring.” It’s up there as one of the greatest experiences one can have, inspiring and moving in a way that’s difficult to overstate, and it’s really easy to get hooked on that feeling.

While I enjoy helping businesses improve their results and morale, the whole-person, life-changing impact of my work is why I do what I do. It truly is a thing of beauty that brings indescribable joy to my heart every single time I see it. There is nothing like watching a group of talented individuals morph into a community of leaders and I will forever cherish the privilege of being a part of such experiences.

This particular program was for the People Leaders of a successful business that recognizes the incalculable value of investing in their people to support them in developing their leadership capabilities. We had clear objectives, plans, metrics, and all the other key ingredients of great leadership development in place on the front end. But the magic we all experienced during the 3-hour graduation and closing ceremony was a result of far more than the mere sum of the program’s parts. The magic was in the unquantifiable subtleties of how the program was designed and implemented and, most importantly, what the participants brought into it.
