It's no secret that patients often struggle to understand the implications of their Electronic Health Record (EHR) data. Despite having access to this wealth of information, many patients are left with more questions than answers after a brief doctor's visit. Consequently, they rely on friends or family members in the medical field to help them interpret their lab results and EHR data. This is where AI technologies like ChatGPT can make a significant difference by providing personalized insights, improving follow-ups, enhancing therapy adherence, and facilitating patient education.
A recent systematic review published in JAMIA Open [1] sheds light on the effectiveness of patient education through patient portals. The study found that access to patient education resources through portals positively impacted patient outcomes. Out of 52 articles included in the review, 21 (40.4%) reported an association between patient portals and patient self-management and health outcomes. These outcomes were measured in three ways: (1) improvement in self-management of health conditions (n = 12, 57%); (2) changes in patient lab values (n = 5, 24%); and (3) adoption of desired health behaviors (n = 4, 19%).
The interactive nature of ChatGPT makes it a powerful tool to bridge this gap, as it can provide personalized, context-aware insights to patients, making complex EHR data more accessible and understandable. By leveraging AI-powered technology, patients can gain a better understanding of their health conditions and self-management strategies, resulting in improved health outcomes and more informed decision-making.
