Unlocking Overwhelm: Why You Feel Like There’s Never Enough Time

Although I post to inspire and empower others, I too have my daily battles. And this week is one of them.
So today I'm keeping it short while I share some behind the scenes moments with you..
In 48 hours, I fly out.
? I’ve not yet packed.
? I’m still refining my speech (let alone practicing it).
? My TEDx script is also due soon.
? I have work commitments and meetings.
? I have things to sort out at home: laundry, packing for my kids and last-minute errands.
And, if I’m being honest, there’s a little bit of fear creeping in: going to a new country, stepping on stage, delivering a message that’s different.
So, am I feeling overwhelmed? Yes, 100%.
But here’s what I’ve learned:
??Overwhelm isn’t just about how much we have to do. It’s about how we think about time.
The Illusion of “Not Enough”
Most of us operate under the belief that time is something we need more of. But in reality, time is constant. It’s our mental relationship with time that determines how overwhelmed we feel.
?? When we believe there’s “never enough time”, we create stress and urgency, rushing through tasks and never feeling like we’ve accomplished enough.
?? When we feel “behind,” we operate from a scarcity mindset, reinforcing the feeling that we’re drowning in responsibilities.
?? When we try to fit everything in, we end up prioritizing tasks that don’t actually move the needle.
The result? Overwhelm. Stress. Burnout.
That’s exactly where I found myself this week. I had to decide how to handle it. And here’s what I did:
Reclaiming My Time: A Real-Life Reset
1?? Calm My Mind & Nervous System: Panicking wasn’t going to help me pack, write my speech, or meet my deadlines. So, I took a moment to pause, breathe, and reset.
2?? Redefine What “Enough” Means: Instead of trying to get everything done, I asked myself:

?? What would actually make me feel accomplished today?
For me, that meant completing the urgent work responsibilities, packing our suitcases, finalizing my key speech points and doing a practice run with my community.
3?? Shift From “Fitting It All In” to “What’s Essential?” Instead of trying to cram in everything, I asked:
?? What absolutely needs to happen today?
? I can’t get on a plane without packing - that’s a must.
? I can rehearse my speech on the plane and do practice calls later.
? Laundry? If it gets done, great. If not, it’s not the end of the world.
By making these shifts, I took control over my time instead of letting it control me.
Your Takeaway: Try the "Pause and Prioritize" Strategy
When you feel overwhelmed, here’s a simple practice to reset:
?? Pause. Breathe. Step back from the mental chaos.
?? Identify what’s essential. What must happen today? What can wait?
?? Let go of unnecessary stress. Not everything needs to be done perfectly or immediately.
Overwhelm thrives in urgency but clarity and organization creates calm.
What’s Next?
This is the second issue in Unlocking Overwhelm, part of The Change We Crave newsletter. In the next issue, we’ll dive into mental clutter, how the weight of unmade decisions, unfinished tasks, and constant distractions contribute to overwhelm more than we realize.
If today’s issue resonated, tell me:

3 周The illusion of "not enough" is such a real experience and also completely manufactured by us. And it creates so much stress and pressure. How you redefine your relationship with time Michelle Machado (PhD) really helps prioritize things to, as you said, getting done what would actually make us feel accomplished. Thanks for the insights, always helpful!
