Unlocking the Opportunity: How Gen Z is Revolutionising the Restaurant Industry ??

According to a recent survey, Gen Z, is expected to make up 45% of all consumers by the end of 2023.?

In a study by the National Restaurant Association, Gen Z is the most likely generation to dine out at least once a week, with 63% of them reporting that they visit a restaurant at least once a week. ?

A survey by OpenTable found that Gen Z is the most likely generation to try new restaurants, with more than half of them saying they enjoy trying new places to eat.

We have spent time researching what experts are saying about the generation, picking out the top five points that are driving their engagement.


Personalisation

  • Gen Z wants to see restaurants offering personalised experiences, and by doing so, restaurants can create loyal fans (who usually spend 67% more).
  • This generation values individuality and personalisation and expects restaurants to reflect these values.
  • Innovate by using tech platforms to empower your teams with a wealth of information on each guest.
  • Build out your CRM to offer personalised recommendations and deals, this will create a higher level of engagement and return rate.

  • Gen Z is highly tech-savvy and expects to see technology creating a seamless experience from booking to leaving your restaurant.
  • The generation has grown up with smartphones and social media, and they expect to be able to use these tools when they dine out.
  • They are looking for ways to have virtual experiences with your brand to help make their decisions, does your website deliver this?
  • Online ordering and delivery is key to their engagement, they want to have your brand at their fingertips at all times..
  • Restaurants need to spend time focussing on the guest journey from start to finish and see how they can use technology to enhance the experience.

Sustainability

  • Gen Z cares about the planet and wants to see restaurants become more sustainable.
  • They are more environmentally conscious and socially aware than previous generations.
  • They want to see that the restaurants they visit to align with their values.
  • Sourcing ingredients from local and organic farms, reducing their carbon footprint is a good start but you need to do more.
  • Being transparent about your practices shows that you value the planet because only eliminating single-use plastics just isn’t enough anymore.


Short-Form Content

  • Gen Z grew up in the digital age, and short-form content is how they digest information.
  • To reach this demographic, restaurants should adopt a similar approach, not only in social media but also in how restaurants talk to customers on their website, in their marketing and on their menus. ?
  • They are also more engaged by videos, so finding ways to use channels like YouTube can give you the edge and become more authentic, something that Gen Z value in the age of #nofilter.


Health and wellness

  • Gen Z is health-savvy and wants to see a variety of choices in every experience.
  • This means offering a variety of healthy options on the menu and being considered in this approach.
  • By highlighting the dishes' nutritional information and benefits, restaurants can appeal to their desire for transparency and make them feel good about their dining choices.


The Gen Z revolution is only going to build momentum and their need for experience will continue to drive which brands they give their loyalty to.
