Unlocking Opportunities for STARs with Quality Remote Jobs

It’s been one year since SkillUp launched its remote jobs catalog, and the results are in. Over the past 12 months, this catalog has been a critical resource for workers skilled through alternative routes (STARs), helping them access flexible, well-paying job opportunities.?

As we reflect on this milestone, let’s dive into the data and see how SkillUp is making a measurable impact on the workforce.

The Power of Remote Work for STARs

Remote work is not just a trend — it’s a game-changer for STARs, who often face significant barriers to employment, such as limited transportation, caregiving responsibilities, or lack of a formal degree.?

Remote jobs provide a solution that addresses these challenges head-on. It’s no surprise then that since launching our remote jobs catalog for STARs in September 2023, 83% of? SkillUp’s job referrals have been for remote roles, despite remote jobs accounting for only 29% of our overall listings.

Here’s how SkillUp has empowered STARs through our remote jobs catalog over the past year:

  • 168,000+ visitors have explored remote jobs in our catalog.
  • 31,000 new user profiles were created by remote job seekers.
  • 2,250 estimated remote job placements, helping individuals secure stable employment.

Driving Quality and Opportunity

The SkillUp remote jobs catalog is built on a commitment to high-quality, sustainable career options for STARs. Unlike many job platforms that may offer low-wage, dead-end roles, our catalog is carefully curated to feature only positions that meet our rigorous quality standards. This has resulted in 88,128 remote job postings that do not require a degree and meet our quality framework, focusing on living wages, growth potential, and in-demand industries.

“We’re extremely conscientious about the jobs we put on our site. Our strategy and operations team also vets the career paths we offer to make sure they pay a living wage,” said Jason Cheng, SkillUp’s SVP of Product and Analytics.

Remote job seekers using SkillUp’s platform…

  • Primarily identify as women (72%)
  • Are younger than 35 years old (60%)?
  • Are earning less than $40,000 (73%)?
  • Identify 67% as people of color, including 47% who identify as Black or Latino

Our data also shows that STARs interacting with remote jobs report higher levels of confidence in career navigation and greater awareness of training and career development opportunities compared to those focused on place-based roles.

Expanding Opportunities for Diverse Talent

SkillUp’s remote jobs catalog has played a critical role in expanding access to quality employment for underserved populations, especially for people without a four-year degree. The flexibility of remote work has opened doors for STARs, allowing them to access high-opportunity roles that might otherwise be out of reach.

Remote job seekers using SkillUp’s platform are primarily younger than 35, while those engaging with place-based roles tend to be older. Remote roles span high-demand industries, including business, healthcare, IT, logistics, and manufacturing. On average, SkillUp remote job users report a wage increase of $12,843.

What’s Next?

For employers and funders, SkillUp offers a unique opportunity to tap into a diverse pool of talented workers. Remote opportunities are integral to supporting STARs in accessing high-opportunity, high-demand careers.?

“Talent is abundant, but equal opportunity is not. We are proud to offer a comprehensive platform that connects STARS with high-quality remote roles that lead to increased earning potential and economic advancement,” said Steve Lee, SkillUp’s CEO. “Through our platform, we also provide industries with well-trained workers who possess the required skills and also ambition.”

Thank you for being part of SkillUp’s journey. Together, we can continue to create more opportunities and transform the future of work for STARs.
