Unlocking Opportunities: Embracing Support and Upskilling as a Military Veteran

Recently, I’ve been focused on expanding my knowledge in business intelligence and data analytics through platforms like LinkedIn Learning and Coursera. I’m especially grateful for the free access to LinkedIn Learning courses through my public library—an invaluable resource, particularly in a place where such opportunities are rare.

In addition to LinkedIn Learning, I’ve enrolled in the Google Advanced Data Analysis and IBM Business Intelligence Analyst courses on Coursera, thanks to ACT Now Education . Founded by Jai Salters , a dedicated military service member, this nonprofit provides valuable opportunities for military-connected individuals. Before discovering Act Now Education, I wasn’t fully aware of the resources available to veterans. Reflecting on my journey, I’m deeply appreciative of the support I’ve received.

I’ve also received training from NPower , completing their Tech Fundamentals Program. I shared details of this experience in a previous article, and it has been instrumental in building a solid foundation in technology. Today, this training has led me to explore Web 3.0, blockchain, and smart contracts. This knowledge is crucial as I work on data analysis projects, helping me gain new skills and insights. Additionally, I’m exploring cryptocurrency and how to keep it secure, which complements my broader understanding of data analytics and emerging technologies.

Reflecting on my time in the US Army, I had to choose between Hawaii and Germany for my final duty station. Choosing Oahu, Hawaii, was an easy decision, and extending for an extra month to stay there was well worth it. Years later, I did travel to Germany as a civilian, enjoying it at my own pace.

After leaving the Army, I faced significant challenges, particularly with job-search support for transitioning veterans. Thankfully, I’ve discovered a wealth of resources available now, which is incredibly encouraging. Initially hesitant to seek help and more comfortable giving rather than receiving, I’ve learned the immense value of accepting support when offered. This realization has helped me connect more deeply with the military community and learn from others who have faced similar challenges.

There’s a strong culture of helping among military veterans, rooted in the camaraderie we shared during our service. This bond drives us to support each other long after our military careers end. Looking ahead, I’m passionate about helping those transitioning out of the military and encouraging others to embrace the support available. Don’t hesitate to accept help when you need it, and when you’re able, pay it forward by supporting others on their journey.
