Latest News and Publications from the World of 3D Printing in Healthcare
Whether it’s facilitating the collaboration between radiologists and surgeons, improving medical students’ ability to visualize relevant anatomy, or using automation to innovate — here are the latest innovations you’ll want to know about.
The Mayo Clinic Documentary Is Out Now
“Seeing into the future: Transforming surgery through technology” documents the Mayo Clinic’s journey to integrate 3D printing technology into their surgical solution for patients in need.
Hear as clinicians speak to the power of 3D visualization using Materialise Mimics Innovation Suite — featured prominently in the documentary. The advantages are difficult to overstate. Improved patient care; fewer hours on the operating table, leading to quicker recovery; the ability to run surgical simulations and potentially improve outcomes — all under one Mayo Clinic umbrella.
In the video, Maria Peris Celda MD PhD , Professor of Neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic Rochester , says, “I envision 3D printing being more and more common. This is going to help advance science; this is going to help advance neurosurgery. It’s a better result, and that’s what we all want — we want the best results for our patients.”
It’s fascinating to see how the innovations driven by Jonathan Morris, MD , Neuroradiologist at Mayo Clinic Rochester and Medical Director Anatomic Modeling Unit, help improve patient care and their clinical experience at Mayo.

Deep Impact — 3D Printing Is Having a Profound Effect on Healthcare
600k patients have been impacted by our work at Materialise, and that’s just the “tip of the healthcare iceberg,” according to a recent Manufacturing Engineering article, highlighting the efforts of Todd Pietila , Director of Medical Sales — Americas and EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa).
“Materialise is one of the largest manufacturers of personalized medical devices in the world, with around 30 industrial-grade polymer and metal 3D printers here in Michigan and many more at our other facilities,” Pietila says. “Hospitals send patient data to us through a secure portal, where one of our clinical engineers processes that data and plans the case collaboratively with the surgeon, after which we will manufacture the device and ship it back to the healthcare provider.”

3D Printing in Medicine — 2nd Edition is available now
If you haven’t read “Post-processing of DICOM Images,” co-written by Materialise Director of Medical Sales – America and EMEA, Todd Pietila , be sure to check it out. From the article:?
“Virtual procedural planning has also become commonplace and the gold standard for specialties in dentistry, cranio-maxillofacial, and orthopaedic surgery. Surgical planning using 3D reconstructed models has inherent benefits in that it leverages three dimensions, resulting in a more precise surgical plan … The impact of medical 3D printing is often the highest when it can be leveraged to design and manufacture a custom implant to treat a patient not suitable for an off-the-shelf implant.” (30-31)
