As a Change Management consultant seconded in an Oil and gas company, operating specifically in the Information and Digitalization department, I assist my client in implementing Change Management interventions for multiple digital transformation projects that will aid the company in adapting to the rapidly changing pace of technology and improve their processes and procedures. This includes facilitating change within departments and the organization by creating a strategy for, implementing, and supporting changes in policies, tools, and technology. Additionally, this involves effective stakeholder management and change management plan tracking to ensure a smooth transition for end-users. Having worked in the IT industry, I have gained experience in initiatives and significant projects and programs related to digital transformation in Oman. My experience includes leading the implementation of an enterprise mobility platform that enables personnel to access company resources through their devices. This platform allows end-users the option of remote working and access to their company resources, including applications, intranet sites, and files, from anywhere and at any time. Moreover, I am working on process automation projects to enhance efficiency through technological advancements and overseeing the transformation of the company's surveillance landscape with the integration of AI. These initiatives contribute to the digital infrastructure transformation for priority service entities that support the directions of Oman Vision 2040.

?In your experience, what are the most common challenges organizations face when undergoing digital transformation in Oman?

Based on the transformational projects I have managed and implemented, cultural and change resistance, security & data privacy concerns are the top two challenges organizations in Oman face when undergoing digital transformation. Since Omanis are deeply rooted in social and organizational values, change cannot happen overnight. It must be a gradual, well-planned, and monitored transition while actively combatting the resistance to change at all times. Identifying the root cause of the resistance and addressing these through awareness sessions, workshops, surveys, and other change interventions can be beneficial in tackling cultural and change resistance. It is also noteworthy to be sensitive to the existing cultural fabric in Oman and to be aligned with the cultural values of the Omani society.

?With the introduction of new technologies in Oman, some of the population remains skeptical and worry of their security and data privacy when utilizing new technologies. Additionally, due to the escalating cyber threats in the Middle East, the focus on safeguarding digital identities and ensuring data privacy has become a critical aspect of digital transformation, and individuals are keen to protect themselves from such threats. Hence, this persists as a challenge when undergoing digital transformation. As a change management consultant, I must support an organization by ensuring that employees adhere to regulations in safeguarding their people and assets, have data governance in place, and guide the end-users in this digital transformation journey.

I believe the most effective change management strategies are resistance mitigation and stakeholders management. Firstly, addressing the cultural resistance and change management challenges are crucial for successful digital transformation initiatives and projects, as previously mentioned. Organizations must align their transformation efforts with their culture, ensure clear communication, and provide adequate training and support to help employees adapt to new technologies and processes.

Effective stakeholders management is essential for driving digital transformation initiatives. As a Change Management Consultant, I ensure all relevant stakeholders are involved in the organization's transformation efforts. Everyone should be interested in this digital transformation journey, from external stakeholders to internal management and lower staff. This collaboration helps to facilitate and share knowledge and best practices, leverage expertise, and drive successful digital transformation initiatives.

How do you balance the need for innovation and transformation with the potential resistance from employees or stakeholders??

As a change management consultant, balancing the need for innovation and transformation with the potential resistance from employees or stakeholders require a delicate balance. Resistance to change is a natural response from people when asked to adopt new behaviors, processes, or technologies. Therefore, engaging and involving all required stakeholders in this digital transformation journey is essential. This includes active engagement of key stakeholders in decision-making processes and stakeholder mapping to identify and understand their expectations. Effective and impactful communication, training, and support can help mitigate resistance to change and drive successful digital transformation initiatives. Additionally, setting clear goals and priorities, involving employees in the change process, and maintaining flexibility to adapt the change management approach help balance innovation and stability.

Organizations in Oman can adopt several strategies to prepare for and navigate future challenges through ongoing digital transformation efforts:

  1. To ensure smooth implementation, they should focus on effectively enhancing and utilizing change management strategies in digital transformation. Change Management is still considered a niche industry in Oman.
  2. They can align their digital transformation initiatives with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which emphasizes the importance of digital transformation in supporting the strategic and vital sectors of the country.
  3. Embracing cloud adoption and leveraging cloud-based platforms can enhance IT services in the country, streamline administrative processes, and prepare the public sector for future challenges.
  4. By actively participating in the Government Digital Transformation Programme, organizations can contribute to the digital transformation of infrastructure for priority service entities, supporting the directions of Oman Vision 2040 and global competitiveness.
