Comparing Google's Bard to OpenAI's ChatGPT

Google's new chatbot, Bard, is a compelling topic. Bard is powered by a research large language model that is an optimized version of LaMDA, designed to boost productivity and fuel curiosity. The chatbot is available in the U.S. and U.K. and users can apply to be on the waitlist.

Comparison with ChatGPT

According to a report from BofA Global Research, Bard has real-time data advantages compared to its rival, OpenAI's ChatGPT, which is trained on data up to 2021. Multimodality will come in due course and access to Bard will roll out in phases, reaching other territories in different languages as well. Bard works similarly to ChatGPT, with users typing queries or asking for creative ideas, and the application generates a response. However, it differs in that users can choose among three answers to the same question. A 'Google it' button will turn prompts into a traditional search query on Google.

However, the reception to the ChatGPT rival has been underwhelming, with several users posting on social media that they found Bard to be lacking in comparison to ChatGPT. Some users have reported hallucinatory responses to their queries, and there have been instances where Bard has struggled with basic arithmetic. Despite Google acknowledging that Bard's 'experiment' may hallucinate responses, users can use the 'Google it' button to fact-check responses.

Google's slower start in the race to catch up to Microsoft has led to internal teams operating on 'code red.' Co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have even been brought back to refocus the company's AI direction, having stepped away from day-to-day duties years ago. Both companies have launched rival AI products and tools within days of one another, with Google announcing generative AI productivity tools for its workspace suite and Microsoft announcing Copilot for 365 a few days later.

Moving on to Bard itself, the chatbot can be an excellent tool for brainstorming ideas, fueling creativity, and boosting productivity. It can help you to reach your goals, whether you're trying to read more books, understand quantum physics, or write a blog post. However, as with any large language model, there are limitations, and users should be aware of them. LLMs learn from a wide range of information, including real-world biases and stereotypes, which can reflect in their outputs. As a result, they can provide inaccurate, misleading, or false information confidently.

Future Improvements and Conclusion

When using Bard, users will often get the choice of a few possible responses to their queries, and it's always a good idea to double-check information if there is any doubt. However, despite the limitations, large language models like Bard can jumpstart human productivity, creativity, and curiosity. The more people use them, the better they get at predicting helpful responses, and we can expect to see improved versions of Bard over time.

Unlocking a New Era of AI Capabilities: Plugin Support for ChatGPT

The recent introduction of plugin support for ChatGPT by OpenAI marks a significant step towards enhancing the capabilities of language models. ChatGPT can now access the web, interpret code, and retrieve data from custom knowledge bases.

Language models, including ChatGPT, have limitations, relying solely on their training data for information. However, plugins can serve as "eyes and ears," granting models access to more recent, personal, or specific information, unlocking a wide range of use cases for ChatGPT. Additionally, plugins enable the AI to perform safe, constrained actions on users’ behalf.

OpenAI has gradually rolled out plugins to study their real-world use, impact, and potential challenges. Two plugins OpenAI is hosting include a web browser and a code interpreter. OpenAI's browsing plugin allows ChatGPT to access information from the internet, expanding its knowledge base beyond the training data. This enables the AI chatbot to provide more up-to-date and accurate information. OpenAI’s code interpreter plugin grants ChatGPT the ability to use Python and handle uploads and downloads in a sandboxed environment. Initial user studies have found the code interpreter to be useful for solving mathematical problems, data analysis, visualization, and file format conversion.

OpenAI has also open-sourced the code for a knowledge base retrieval plugin, allowing developers to augment ChatGPT with their own information. As a self-hosted solution, developers can deploy their own version and register it with ChatGPT. It uses OpenAI embeddings and supports various vector databases for indexing and searching documents.

Plugin support links ChatGPT with external apps, giving it the power to interact with developer-defined APIs. This enhances ChatGPT's abilities, enabling it to accomplish many different tasks such as fetching real-time info like sports scores, stock market updates, or the latest headlines, accessing knowledge-base data such as company documents or personal notes, and performing actions for users like booking flights or ordering food. The first batch of plugins comes from companies including Expedia, FiscalNote, Instacart, KAYAK, Klarna, Milo, OpenTable, Shopify, Slack, Speak, Wolfram, and Zapier.

Plugin alpha access is being extended to users and developers on a waitlist. Initially, access will be limited to a selection of developers and ChatGPT Plus users, with plans to increase access gradually.

OpenAI plugins connect ChatGPT to third-party applications. These plugins enable ChatGPT to interact with APIs defined by developers, enhancing ChatGPT's capabilities and allowing it to perform a wide range of actions. Plugin developers expose one or more API endpoints, accompanied by a standardized manifest file and an OpenAPI specification. These define the plugin's functionality, allowing ChatGPT to consume the files and make calls to the developer-defined APIs.

In summary, the browsing, code interpreter, and retrieval plugins are just the beginning. As the development and integration of plugins continue, the ChatGPT ecosystem will become increasingly useful, creating new opportunities for users and developers alike.

Adobe's Firefly: A New Tool for Creative Generative AI

No alt text provided for this image

Firefly is a family of creative generative AI models that are being integrated into Adobe products. This beta version of the first Firefly model can use everyday language to generate extraordinary new content. The possibilities are endless as Firefly has the potential to do much more.

Firefly is designed for creators, and Adobe is committed to developing creative generative AI responsibly, with creators at the center. Our mission is to give creators every advantage - not just creatively, but practically. The vision for Firefly is to help people expand upon their natural creativity. As an embedded model inside Adobe products, Firefly will offer generative AI tools made specifically for creative needs, use cases, and workflows.

One of the exciting features of Firefly is the ability to generate custom vectors, brushes, and textures from just a few words or even a sketch. This feature will be built into Firefly, along with the ability to edit what you create using the tools you already know and love. Firefly is also exploring the potential of text-based video editing so you can describe what look you want, and instantly change the colors and settings to match.

Firefly will offer distinct content creation for everyone, including unique posters, banners, social posts, and more with a simple text prompt. The plan is to do this and more, like uploading a mood board to generate totally original, customizable content. In the future, we hope to enable Firefly to do amazing work with 3D, like turning simple 3D compositions into photorealistic images and quickly creating new styles and variations of 3D objects.

Once Firefly is out of its beta stage, creators will have the option to use content generated in Firefly commercially. As Firefly evolves, we expect to offer creators a choice of different Firefly models designed for different uses.

We understand the importance of responsibility and transparency in generative AI. Therefore, we're standing up for accountability, responsibility, and transparency in generative AI. We're working towards a universal “Do Not Train” Content Credentials tag that will remain associated with a piece of content wherever it is used, published, or stored.

In conclusion, the first Firefly model is already available in beta, and we cannot wait to see the amazing work creators will do with this generative AI tool. Adobe is committed to developing creative generative AI responsibly, with creators at the center. Firefly will offer generative AI tools made specifically for creative needs, use cases, and workflows, and we are excited to see where the future of Firefly takes us.
