Unlocking Learning: The "Whats The Story?" Game for Dublin City Libraries

Recently we were approached by Ireland’s largest marketing communications company, Core, to collaborate on an exciting new project for Dublin City Libraries. Core are spearheading a promotional campaign aimed at increasing community engagement and making valuable book resources more accessible to the public.

The central idea of the promotion was to create an innovative way for library visitors to access free book resources, encouraging a love for reading and learning via a free online game. The game follows the concept of a puzzle-like illustration, designed to captivate and challenge players with its intricate and engaging format. Core sought our expertise to develop the online game, as they were familiar with our work in this area for National Book Tokens.

The game is a collection of 100 clues, each carefully illustrated to hint at a specific book franchise or title. Players are invited to select from these clues and make their guesses, testing their literary knowledge and observational skills. This approach not only provides entertainment but also serves a greater purpose: raising awareness for literacy and promoting a love of books.

To maximise accessibility and reach, Dublin City Libraries and Core devised a clever distribution strategy. They decided to make the game a fantastic illustration that is also QR Code, that could be prominently featured on posters and promotional materials around the city.

By simply scanning the QR code with a smartphone, users are directed to the game’s landing page, where they can immediately begin the challenge of guessing all 100 book titles. The game can also be accessed internally through the Dublin City Libraries website.

Given the complex nature if the QR code design, and the short timescales, we were able to accelerate delivery utilising existing IP and meet the deadline. We were particularly delighted with the flawless UX, with the website working perfectly across both mobile and desktop devices.

The game officially launched for users on the 18th of June, and the response has been positive. By the 9th of July, the Whats the Story? Game had already attracted 1,400 users, demonstrating strong community interest and engagement.
