Unlocking the Joys of Reading: Tips for Those Who Hate to Read

Unlocking the Joys of Reading: Tips for Those Who Hate to Read

Listen to the Newsletter

In the next few issues of this newsletter, I’ll be addressing frequently asked questions. The first question is a variation of I hate reading, how can I read more. Some professionals ask this question for themselves and many ask this question for their children.

Reading has always been a part of my life. I go through periods where I’ll read a specific genre. Now I try to find more balance - if there is such a thing - in my reading. For many people, reading is a chore, especially if they have struggled with it since childhood. Whether it's a lack of interest in the material or difficulty with comprehension, some people simply hate to read.?

However, reading is an important skill to have. And it can provide a wealth of benefits in terms of personal and professional growth. If you are someone who hates to read, there are ways to make the process more enjoyable and effective.

Why Do You Hate Reading?

First, consider why you hate to read. Can you even answer that question? Is it the material that you find uninteresting? If it is, try finding books or articles on topics that you are passionate about.?

When someone tells me they hate to read, but know that it’s important to read. The first question I ask is, “What are you passionate about?”

If you’re not a reader, you may find getting started hard. That’s why it’s important to read about what interests you. For example, if you love cars, read about the history of cars. Or go with something that’s intriguing about cars. And go with books off the beaten path.?

  • Auto Biography: A Classic Car, an Outlaw Motorhead, and 57 Years of the American Dream by Earl Swift
  • The Car by Gary Paulsen
  • Classic Car: The Definitive Visual History
  • Hot Rod Empire: Robert E. Petersen and the Creation of the World's Most Popular Car and Motorcycle Magazines by Matt Stone

You might be surprised at how much more enjoyable reading becomes when you are invested in the subject.?

Do You Have a Problem Understanding What You Read?

Do you have difficulty understanding what you are reading? If comprehension is your problem, try reading in shorter bursts. Start with just a few pages a day and gradually work your way up. Take breaks in between reading sessions to give your brain a chance to absorb what you have just read.?

Here are some other recommendations. Read comic books, graphic novels and children’s books.

Comic Books

You can find comic books on virtually any topic. If I use the car example again, you could read:

Hot Rods and Racing Cars v1 #3 by Charlton Comics

  • The Fast and the Furriest by Kean Soo
  • Ghost Racers by Felipe Smith and Juan Gedeon (Book 1 - 4)
  • Science Comics: Cars: Engines That Move You by Dan Zettwoch

Graphic Novels

  • Pixar Cars 3: Movie Graphic Novel by Disney Pixar Animators

Surprise Island, A Graphic Novel #2 (The Boxcar Children Graphic Novels) by Gertrude Chandler Warner and Mike Dubisch

Children’s Books

  • Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car by Ian Fleming (Book 1 - 4)
  • History of Cars: An invention that changed the world by Prajjwalit Yadav

Consider joining a book club or finding a reading buddy. Discussing what you have read with others helps you gain a better understanding of the material. And may even help you find new insights or perspectives.

Have a Purpose for Reading

Another strategy is to read with a purpose in mind. In previous issues of this newsletter, I’ve emphasized the importance of having a purpose for reading books. Make sure it’s a compelling one, so you’ll want to read the book. Set specific goals for yourself, such as learning something new, improving your vocabulary, or simply enjoying a good story. This helps you stay motivated and focused as you read.

Other Advice

I know people who hate reading books, but will listen to audiobooks. You can also try using reading aids, such as e-readers that offer features like highlighting and note-taking. These make it easier for you to keep track of important information and stay engaged with the material.

Conclusion

Reading doesn't have to be a dreaded task. With a few simple strategies and a willingness to experiment with different approaches, even those who hate to read can discover the joys of this valuable skill.?
