In August 2017, Total SE acquired the Exploration & Production assets of Maersk Oil, becoming the second-largest operator in the North Sea. This acquisition brought a significant challenge: over 320 million files totaling 4 petabytes of data needed to be organized and managed without disrupting ongoing operations.

To address this, Total Upstream Denmark (TUDK) partnered with Flare Solutions, leveraging their Folio application to bring structure and efficiency to the data integration process.

Key Challenges

Folio scanned and mapped the data into a graph database, offering a clear representation of the dataset and empowering Total to make informed decisions on migration, archiving, and deletion.

Flare’s innovative workflows used Folio to categorize the data into actionable groups:

  • Migrate: Critical data integrated into Total’s systems.
  • Archive: Data valuable for the future safely stored.
  • Delete: Redundant data removed to optimize resources.

Folio enriched over 1.3 million high-value datasets with contextual and geographical tags, ensuring precise and efficient searches. Federated searches were enabled by linking systems such as Livelink and eSearch, and sensitive datasets were handled with care to ensure compliance.

  • Rapid and Targeted Search: A dedicated engine retrieves data within seconds, enhanced by contextual tagging for precise results.
