Before I dive in, a word about prayer: the word prayer has become a word we cant use freely anymore since it denotes something that is against a free society in many circles. Many use the term "meditation" or "reflection" when talking about prayer, yet in essence, deep inner reflection and connecting to our higher selves is precisely what all these practices aim to achieve.
In my world, prayer is transformative. My definition of prayer has changed over the years from one of praying for something I need, to one where I'm in communion with a higher intelligence. This intelligence is part of me and I have the power within me to connect to it. What this intelligence is and where it resides, is where many get caught up in names and titles. I choose not to name a dimension of being that can't be named. As the great poet and Sufi, Jalaaludin Rumi says:
"The language of God is silence. All else is poor translation".
Not to forget the great Lao Tze who provides clarity with ambiguity:
"The Tao that can be named is not the real Tao"
In a world where the noise of modern life can drown out our inner voice, where external pressures shape our perceptions, it's time to reclaim our power and rediscover the true essence of leadership. It begins with the transformative practices of reflection and prayer—an intimate connection that empowers you to lead with authenticity and purpose.
Leading with Purpose and Meaning
The very fabric of your being is woven with divine purpose. You are chosen for these times, as Leonard Sweet wisely affirms.
“God has picked us for such times as these” (Nelson, 2002, p. 10).
Howard Thurman stated,
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have become alive” (Zoradi, 2018, p. 17).
Thurman's words echo through our souls, urging us to unearth what makes us come alive. For what ignites our spirit aligns with the very calling that has been placed upon us.
I would posit that “what makes you come alive” is the same thing as that which “God has picked us for.” To translate this into an organizational leadership setting, “what makes you come alive” equates to:
“leader and leading become one, where we lead primarily out of who we are as opposed to what we know, what we can do, and what position we hold”
Leadership goes beyond titles and expertise; it flows from the depths of your being. It emerges when you embrace your true self and lead from a place of wholeness. It is the fusion of your identity, your passion and your innate gifts that fuels your influence and impact.
Yet, the challenges that surround us often erode our confidence. The turbulent waves of uncertainty and conflicting opinions can shatter trust in those deemed as experts. But reflection becomes your refuge—a sanctuary amidst the storm.
Amidst the chaos, reflection guides you to your truth. It invites you to question, to seek clarity and to rise above the clamor. It is not about finding fault or succumbing to self-doubt; it is about discovering your authentic voice and standing tall amidst the noise.
In the realm of leadership, reflection becomes your compass, navigating the uncharted territories of complexity. It empowers you to unravel uncertainty, embrace the uniqueness of each situation, and resolve conflicts with wisdom and grace. It is in the midst of action that your reflection breathes life into your decisions.
But tread carefully, for good intentions can sometimes blind us to unintended consequences. The book "When Helping Hurts " unveils the shadows that can lurk beneath our noblest endeavors. Reflection awakens your empathy, enabling you to truly understand the needs of others and serve them with genuine humility.

Reflection and Prayer
Prayer is not limited to conventional understanding; it is a tool for meditation, a gateway to deeper self-awareness. It is in the quiet moments of intentional connection that you uncover divine wisdom, whispering guidance into your soul.
When you align your actions with this higher purpose, your leadership becomes a vessel for inspired transformation.
In the depths of your reflection and prayer, you discover an unwavering truth: You are a conduit of light, radiating the essence of your faith to all those around you.
Your authenticity and unwavering spirit become a beacon, inspiring others to embrace their own journey and lead with courage.
Today, embrace the power within. Embrace reflection and prayer as the catalysts for your growth. Let them embolden you to rise above the ordinary, to transcend the limitations imposed by the world, and to embrace the extraordinary leader that resides within your heart.
In the sanctuary of your soul, reflection and prayer ignite the flame of transformation.
Embrace them and become the leader you were destined to be—a beacon of light, a source of inspiration, and a catalyst for positive change.
