Unlocking human potential to enable people to work better together to address complex challenges: my leadership academy contribution

I was at first flattered when asked to be part of my organisation's leadership academy, then a bit apprehensive and after delivering a few sessions I am pleased with some great feedback. People attending my talk were asked what resonated most for them and they gave the following replies:

  • praise your team more, motivate them
  • awareness of self and awareness of others
  • be the person that makes worthwhile contributions
  • create the environment with clear goals
  • progression of management level and skills
  • motivation model - intrinsic/extrinsic

And finally, they all said how motivating they found the talk.

So, on this basis I thought I’d share the overall approach of the leadership academy and my contribution. The leadership academy supports the development of staff through a variety of ways including leadership, management and coaching.

There is a coherent pathway to follow so that each member of staff can develop their skills and expertise in a way that suits them. Each course is CPD accredited and delivered by various in-house staff.

The pathway is integrated into the wider NHS provision of training and helps develop individuals, teams and ultimately, the organisation.

My role in the organisation is to deliver the research strategy. The first three year phase has been to introduce a step change of transforming culture so that research is viewed as an everyday expectation rather than an exception. This has been achieved using a variety of large scale change initiatives. One key element has been to make sure the personal goals of all research staff are aligned with the organisation’s vision for research:

to enhance patient care and experience through research and innovation

The first phase of the research strategy has been highly successful and lessons learnt from this exercise have formed the basis of my contribution to the leadership academy.

You can see the slides below and I would appreciate any feedback via LinkedIn.

A wonderful story emerges from the presentation - some great graphics in there with solid theory, evidence and essentially... experience
