Throughout my years in the corporate world, I have observed varying degrees of motivation: from individuals who are entirely amotivated, showing no inclination towards their work, to those spending hours staring at a computer screen, grappling with decisions as trivial as selecting a color for a bar graph destined for an unread and unappreciated report.

The next distinct type of motivation involves individuals externally interested and motivated. They gravitate towards trendy or hip topics, often unrelated to the immediate task at hand, simply because it captures the interest of the boss or has sparked curiosity in some manner.

The final distinct category is what I refer to as autonomous employees—individuals who exude confidence and possess the highest energy levels when tackling problems, designing solutions, or fostering innovation. This group not only displays exceptional motivation but also excels in effectively managing their energies. In addition to commonplace practices like staying hydrated and engaging in physical exercise, they excel in creating priority lists for their team members and exhibit unwavering confidence when delegating tasks.

These autonomous employees are adept at efficient energy management, and their approach goes beyond the basics. They demonstrate a profound understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to allocate tasks strategically. Their ability to delegate tasks is underpinned by a deep-seated confidence in their team's capabilities.

Personal Reflections

Bringing a personal touch to the discussion, I reflect on my own journey in Silicon Valley, a hotbed of innovation and high-stakes challenges. Freshly armed with a Ph.D., I entered the workforce during a pivotal time in the tech industry.
