When you think of creativity, images of iconic figures like Salvador Dali, musicians like Taylor Swift, or inventors like Thomas Edison might come to mind. You may picture innovative products or groundbreaking ideas. However, only some people would immediately connect creativity with personal well-being.?
Creativity has long been associated with happiness, but recent research by Tan, Chuah, Lee, and Tan (2021) highlights creativity's positive impact on well-being. Studies found that engaging in creative tasks can significantly boost one’s sense of subjective well-being, reducing stress and enhancing life satisfaction. This insight is valuable for students and professionals seeking to improve their creative output and mental health.
Over the past six years, I've guided more than 3,000 students in discovering and reigniting their creative potential. Lately, I've been deeply moved by how many students have shared that embracing creativity has helped them prioritize their well-being. In a time when mental health challenges are increasingly affecting young people, creativity has emerged as a powerful tool for healing.
Research shows that practicing creativity can reduce stress, creating a more balanced mindset. It serves as a mental break, offering a sense of accomplishment and control. Nurturing creativity builds emotional resilience, helping individuals approach challenges with fresh perspectives and problem-solving skills. This not only supports professional growth but also promotes overall well-being. Through this process, students come to understand that creativity isn’t just a crucial skill for today’s workforce—it’s also a key to fostering personal well-being and developing a growth mindset for life.
