Yes I’ve seen the articles that say prompt engineering is dead… That’s like saying search engine optimization is dead, its going to be less critical for the normal user but you’re going to be a power user so you need to be able to do more!

Prompt engineering is a critical skill for anyone looking to leverage AI effectively. It involves understanding how to communicate with the model to elicit specific responses or perform tasks.

Here are strategies to master this art, lets become Author Conan Doyle for a few minutes:

1. Be Specific: Clarity and specificity in your prompts help narrow down the AI's focus, leading to more accurate and relevant responses. Instead of asking, "How do I make a cake?" specify the type of cake or dietary restrictions, e.g., "How do I bake a gluten-free chocolate cake?"

Here’s an example of a specific prompt that's 2 paragraphs: 

Generate text that mirrors the elegance and precision of late 19th to early 20th-century literature, characterized by its clear, detailed narrative and a formal yet accessible use of language. The writing should be rich in vocabulary and keen observation, applying analytical thinking and logical structuring to present arguments or convey messages in a compelling manner. Adopt a first-person narrative style to add a personal and engaging touch, creating a direct connection with the reader that is both informative and immersive. 

When writing, the text should unfold like a well-plotted mystery, revealing information gradually in a manner that builds anticipation and maintains interest. Explaining that you need it to sound like a nurse will have it prioritize nurses’ styles of writing and abbreviations. 

If you want to sound professional tell it you want to sound like a CEO. 

If you want to sound academic tell it that. 

If you want to have it not flag as a GPT on a checker tell it to be a handful of different types of people and tell it to chose ten random words at the start of every response. That will take it further away from the standard.        

1. Use Clear Instructions: Clearly state what you want ChatGPT to do. If you're looking for a list, a detailed explanation, or a brief summary, make that clear in your prompt.

Be mindful different language can be more clear. When writing asking it for 2000 words has a different result than 50 sentences, or 2 pages.

 This can help identify which type of prompt yields the best response for your specific need. Ask the system for it to give examples of different prompt styles if you can’t think of any.        

1. Leverage the "Teach Me" Approach: When seeking explanations or learning material, framing your prompt as "Teach me about..." encourages the AI to adopt an informative and educative tone, making complex information more accessible.
2. Incorporate Keywords: For tasks requiring specific knowledge or skills, including relevant keywords in your prompts can guide the AI to tailor its responses accordingly, enhancing the accuracy and relevance of the information provided.
