Unlocking Career Growth: The Power of Networking and Reciprocity

Networking is an essential skill that can propel your career forward, but also can bring a lot of ease and flow to your work as well. When we actively work to build positive relationships we get more from others in return. During a recent coaching session with a leader, we outlined a yearly networking plan that highlighted the importance of proactive relationship-building. Without networking, you risk getting stuck in the same position, with the only recognition coming during performance reviews. If you don't actively connect with others, they may not even know what you want or what you’re capable of achieving.

Networking should be more than just a professional obligation; it should be about building meaningful, trusting relationships. By helping others succeed, you invite the power of reciprocity—people will be more likely to support you in return.

What Happens When You Don’t Network

If you neglect networking, you might find yourself trapped in a cycle of stagnation. You could become invisible in your organization, with your contributions overlooked and your career aspirations misunderstood. Networking isn't just about making connections—it's about ensuring those connections are meaningful and supportive. The absence of a strong network can leave you feeling isolated, making it difficult to advance or pivot when necessary.

Embracing Networking and Helping Others Win

To truly benefit from networking, it’s crucial to shift your mindset. Consider networking as an opportunity to mentor others, share opportunities, and build lasting relationships. Building these relationships isn't just about formal business connections—often, the most meaningful networks are created through informal interactions, like a monthly lunch or a quick coffee meeting.

Tips for Building Your Network

  • Set Clear Goals: What do you want to achieve from your networking activities? Are you seeking mentorship, opportunities, or just building friendships?
  • Create a Routine: Schedule regular time for networking—whether it’s weekly coffee chats or quarterly lunches with peers.
  • Know Your Audience: Identify the people you want to connect with, their roles, and how they can align with your goals.
  • Choose the Right Setting: Decide whether you prefer formal or informal meetings, and consider whether you want to network in groups or one-on-one.
  • Keep Track: Use tools like an Excel sheet to track your contacts, meeting frequencies, and key takeaways.

Networking isn't just about advancing your career—it's about building a supportive community around you. A great resource is the book Never Eat Alone! Remember, when you help others win, you win too.
