Unlocking Canada's Productivity Potential: Insights from Deloitte Connect

In a world where economic landscapes are rapidly changing, Canada's productivity problem has never been more pressing. At the recent Deloitte Connect conference, I had the privilege of sharing the stage with distinguished panelists Benjamin Bergen , Carolyn Hamer , and Malick Deme to unravel this complex issue. Our discussion centered on innovative solutions to unlock Canada's productivity potential—a topic critical to our country's economic future.

Understanding the Productivity Challenge

Our economy narrowly avoided a technical recession, thanks to easing inflation pressures and a sturdy labour market. A pivot by the Bank of Canada this summer tees up for the economy to continue to grow. However, the stark reality is that Canada lags significantly behind its global counterparts in terms of GDP per capita and productivity growth. This lag is not just a statistic; it's a clarion call for action.

Effective productivity leads to robust economic growth, higher incomes, and better standards of living. It also helps in maintaining sustainable inflation rates and wage growth. As we've seen, the lack of productivity growth is linked to stagnating wages and could lead to higher long-term interest rates, affecting our economic stability.

Productivity is influenced by both labor and capital inputs. While the labor market benefits from a fast-growing population due to immigration, productivity per hour worked and capital investments tell a different story. Canada trails behind the USA and other G7 nations in terms of productivity. The capital component in Canada is not looking great, with a significant slowdown in investment across industries since 2014. Encouraging more investment is necessary to improve the country's productivity.

Strategic Levers to Enhance Productivity

1.???? Investment in Technology and Innovation: Ben Bergen eloquently highlighted the transformative impact of AI and digital technologies. By investing in these areas, Canadian businesses can leapfrog existing productivity barriers, fostering a more dynamic economic environment.

2.???? Workforce Development: Carolyn Hamer stressed the importance of investing in our human capital. A focus on continuous learning and skill development, particularly in digital competencies, is essential to keep pace with technological advancements and enhance workforce productivity.

3.???? Government Policies and Incentives: As Malick Deme pointed out, supportive government policies play a pivotal role. Strategic incentives such as tax benefits, grants, and streamlined regulations can encourage investment in technology and infrastructure, significantly boosting productivity.

4.???? Collaboration Across Ecosystems: Adopting an ecosystem approach can lead to remarkable gains in productivity. By fostering strong ecosystems that encourage collaboration between startups, established companies, and educational institutions, we can create a synergistic environment that breeds innovation and productivity.

My Take: Building a Collaborative Ecosystem

From my perspective, the key to solving Canada's productivity puzzle lies in building robust ecosystems that encourage collaboration between government, industry, and academia. It's about creating an environment where innovation can thrive, and where Canadian businesses can be empowered with the tools and knowledge to compete on a global stage.

An ecosystem approach involves cross-industry and cross-business collaborations that are crucial for co-creation and co-investment. This model encourages the integration of innovative solutions into traditional industries, thereby amplifying productivity.

Call to Action: Let's Enhance Productivity Through Innovation

The journey to enhanced productivity is complex but achievable with the right mix of determination, innovation, and collaboration. Let's commit to making Canada a beacon of productivity and economic resilience. Join me in this pivotal movement. Let's innovate, invest, and inspire a brighter future for all Canadians.
