Unlocking Campus Value: Insights from IBS Conference's Opening Day

Day one of the Sheraton Hotel Times Square IBS - Intercollegiate Broadcasting System, Inc. Conference has proven invaluable. I had the pleasure of joining the 'Making Yourself More Valuable To Your Campus' session, a deep dive into enhancing the significance of campus broadcast outlets, led by experts Danny Lemos from California State University, Long Beach , Matt Cunningham from Columbia College Chicago's WCRX-FM, and moderated by IBS Board Chair Norm Prusslin.

Danny's narrative was a masterclass in trust-building within the university. He detailed his journey to securing a bigger station budget by establishing robust relationships with Calstate University's administrators. His strategy? Know the budget sources, connect with staff, and build trust through thoughtful gestures like partnering with local eateries to host key university figures. His emphasis on celebrating wins and keeping the campus informed about the station's achievements resonated deeply with me.

Matt shared his approach to making the broadcast outlet indispensable by fostering a trustworthy environment for students. He highlighted the impact of hearing a familiar voice on air and encouraged finding creative ways to increase student involvement and on-air presence.

When audience members were invited to share their best practices, I proudly spoke about TMN's methods, leading to an enriching exchange of ideas with students eager to replicate our success in their schools.

This session wasn't just informative—it was an interactive experience that underscored the power of community and communication in elevating our work. I'm eager to absorb more knowledge in the coming sessions.
