Unlocking Business Growth Through the Evolution of Core Values

Have you given any thought to what the values are in your business? For Your Biz Rules, we’ve defined them as transformation, collaboration, impact, and legacy.?Woven through our value statements is also the theme of generosity.??

If you’ve been reading this weekly business love letter, you’ve likely seen those themes pop up once or twice.??

When working with our clients on their mission and vision statements, we always tie in values.?Values are the business’ soul, the mission is its purpose, and the vision is the good work they hope to achieve.

You can launch and operate a business as a sole proprietorship without doing this work because you live your values.?Your mission is to make money, and your vision is to stay in business. You are still in survival mode - a very natural and normal place. While there is value in doing this work at this stage, it’s not mission-critical.

When you look to scale your business beyond yourself, that’s the perfect time to do this work.??

If you’ve been in business for a while, already have a team, and are being called to something more, this too is a perfect time to do this work as well.?The timing of this work becomes mission-critical so that the business keeps its soul, culture, and has a guiding light to stay the course of your vision.

This recently played out for a client we’ve worked with since 2020. The business had a mission and vision and was poised for scaling. We had great success as we helped quadruple the business in 9 months. 2021 and 2022 focused on more team, processes, and repeatability. Then focusing on 2023, our client says, “Let’s do it again; I feel called to more.”

The first thing we did was go back to the mission and vision and the employee value proposition.? The next expansion stage would diversify revenue streams and require key hires to align with the owner’s vision.

At first glance, it seemed that the mission and vision would hold, yet through the conversations, golden nuggets of genius were getting dropped right and left - the kind that gives you goosebumps. They were so good that the mission and vision needed to evolve.

As we massaged the messages into something compelling, simple, and understandable other magical things began to develop.

The new messaging begins to show up in marketing - which gets the audience reaching out and complimenting (while also sending referrals). Potential key hires are leaning in and expressing interest in joining the business, and the existing team is fired up and ready to put it to work in their way.

There is a palatable energy that motivates, inspires, and creates new opportunities. Externally the work provides a filter and ensures that future people and opportunities align with the business's culture, which makes it so easy to say no to the opportunities that are not a good fit.

Many business owners do this work independently but often end up with a superficial message.? They stop at what they think is right, missing out on finding their heart song. At Your Biz Rules, we like to go deeper, ask the hard questions, and challenge the meaning of the words. We help refine until the mission, vision, and values are super clear.? Then, we guide our clients to implement this clarity into their business, helping it to grow and scale to reach new heights.

What about you? Do you have a clear mission and vision? Reach out if you would like another set of eyes on them!

If you are looking to create more predictable profits so you can grow and scale without burnout, let’s chat. Feel free to send me a DM or find time on my calendar so that we can make it happen.
