Last week, we discussed the value in having team members of all different generations and how they have unique perspectives to share with one another. This week, we are continuing on the theme of learning, highlighting what companies can do to encourage a culture of continuous learning.
Learning doesn’t stop the minute you finish your formal education. You are always picking up lessons that improve your life, like learning about a route that cuts your travel time in half or a book that changes your habits for the better.?
This carries over to work as well.
So How Can Companies Promote a Culture of Continued Learning??
We are here to help! Here are steps your team can take to encourage a lifetime of growth and learning:
- Providing Learning Opportunities: Starting off easy--companies can encourage learning by providing opportunities to do so. These can include workshops, webinars, and cross-departmental knowledge sharing sessions, such as ‘lunch and learns’. There are also countless free webinars available online from experts across a range of industries around the world. Here are some tools we recommend:AmplifyCourseraLinkedIn Learning
- Embracing Failure as a Part of Learning: Unfortunately, we are only human. Remember that it is crucial to foster a culture that accepts and supports team members even after they have made a mistake. The opportunity for growth and improvement is far more important to emphasise than a temporary inconvenience. What’s more: encourage experimentation and innovation to push team members to new heights. Failure is often only a temporary obstacle to achieving success.
- Feedback Mechanisms: It is hard to learn if one never knows they are doing something incorrectly. The easiest way to improve inefficient or downright incorrect work is to provide check-ins and make sure people are on the right path. One strategy is to implement feedback loops that allow employees to provide input on learning programs and suggest areas for improvement. It is important not to be overly harsh or critical, but constructive feedback is a great tool for teams to do their best work.?
- Diversity of Perspectives: It is no secret that diversity is powerful. Teams should harness that power to learn from a range of viewpoints and listen to the unique ideas team members bring to the table. Learning from colleagues with different backgrounds enhances creativity and problem-solving. Creating a culture where people are comfortable and encouraged to share their ideas contributes to the success of the entire team.
- Celebrate Learning Journeys: One of the fastest ways to inspire excitement around learning is to celebrate those who are doing it. Sharing success stories of employees who have benefited from learning initiatives inspires others to embark on their own growth journeys. Leaders should model the behaviour they want to see, and incentivise others to follow in their footsteps.
