With limited resources and a need to move fast, it's easy to overlook tracking data early on. However, when the time is right, setting up Google Analytics can be a powerful way to turn your actions into measurable outcomes. Here's how we approached it…
In the early days of your startup, you’re busy laying down the foundation—building your audience, creating digital assets, and gaining momentum. Traffic tracking might not seem like a priority at this stage, and that's okay. The focus should be on execution: developing those lead measures like SEO, social media, and referrals to create an initial flow of engagement.
Once you've established your presence, it's time to start tracking those results—the lag measures. Setting up Google Analytics is about creating a clear line of sight into how your audience is interacting with your business. At Intelligent Resourcing, we set up tags to track core pages, lead magnets, and calls to action like scheduling consultations. It allows us to measure the effectiveness of our content and identify where to tweak for improvement. ??
The beauty of this approach? It's data-driven decision-making, helping you see what's resonating and what’s not. For instance, if a page is getting views but not downloads, that's a sign to A/B test and optimise for better conversions. Startups, like any business, are built on a series of hypotheses—does this content drive engagement, does this action lead to conversions? By tracking and measuring, you can refine your strategy based on what the data is telling you.
While setting up Google Analytics was not our first step (we waited until we had assets and traction), it has been vital for ongoing growth. Keep an eye on your metrics and processes; what works today may not work tomorrow. And remember—“build it and they will come” is rarely true in a startup. It's about testing, measuring, and adjusting. ???
Key Takeaways:
?? Key Takeaway #1: Lead vs. Lag Measures ????
Startups live and die by their ability to execute effectively. Lead measures are your proactive actions—building SEO, content creation, or referrals—that drive results later (lag measures). It’s all about testing your hypotheses: Does this strategy work, or does it fall flat??
?? Key Takeaway #2: Set Up Early, But Not Too Early ????
We waited over 50 days before setting up Google Analytics. ...Why? At the very start, our focus was on building the foundation—our website, social presence, and core content. Setting up analytics too early can be a distraction; you’ll likely be tracking data before you have enough traffic to get meaningful insights. Once we had our core assets in place, it was time to track the data that mattered: user interactions, downloads, and engagement with our lead magnets. Timing is everything, and we wanted to make sure our efforts were geared toward capturing real, actionable data that could inform our strategy.
?? Key Takeaway #3: Data Drives Decision-Making ?? Once you’ve got Analytics up and running, it’s not just about collecting numbers—it’s about understanding what those numbers mean for your business. Is your traffic converting? Are people engaging with your content? Setting up specific tags to track key actions (like scheduling a consultation or downloading a lead magnet) allows you to identify gaps in the customer journey and test what works best. It’s not a set-and-forget situation; use the data to continually optimise your pages, content, and CTAs for maximum impact.

?? Pro Tip: Test, Measure, Refine ??
When setting up Google Analytics, start small. Focus on tracking the key pages or actions that directly impact your business goals. As your traffic grows, you can add more tags and tracking to refine your strategy. Always treat your data like a conversation—see what it’s telling you, and adapt accordingly.
