Web3.0 meets the Raindance 30th Anniversary!

Here at Raindance we’re obsessed with THREE! This year is our huge 30th birthday and to celebrate – what better way to worship the ‘3’ than to make a big, bold move into web3.0.. Raindance values the help of our partners, ThinkIP and Paus.tv.

I could evangelise for hours about the adventures we’ve had here at Raindance over the last thirty years, but it will pale against the adventures we are about to have in the wild west of web3.0 and blockchain. ?

Entering the metaverse as a film school and film festival will obviously have its challenges, but we’re up for it! We’ve been through thirty years of change, diversification, political disruption, changing governments, changing economies and now a change in the monarch.?

Like many out there who extol the virtues of blockchain technology, smart contracts and immersive learning, we feel the metaverse is here for good and offers us as a centre of learning a huge opportunity to embrace the new platforms available to educate students in filmmaking, production, writing, directing and fund-raising.?We will harness the next-generation hardware, software, platforms and communities to offer qualifications in Film3 and promote emerging talent.?

Our Filmmaking Metaversity, will offer a diverse and inclusive suite of tailored courses - wherever you are in the world you will be able to access our filmmaking content and accelerate your film career.?

So how are we going to do this? It’s all back to the three. As you’d imagine we are developing our strategy for such a momentous step and it’s a three-pronged approach – would you expect anything less? Raindance is already in discussions with financial institutions, legislative authorities and experts in the field of digital currencies to allow us to receive payments in various coins and tokens. Like so many areas of web3.0, digital currencies are here to stay and will only grow in usage. Therefore, we will be ready to accommodate individuals wishing to pay, donate and invest using these forms of currency.

Secondly, we have launched the Raindance collection of NFT’s, which offer unique and exciting utilities. Imagine the opportunity to access our exclusive Film festival parties, the red-carpet galas, meeting the movie stars, maybe even having dinner with them. Having the sum-total of our film school’s thirty-years of knowledge at your fingertips. The ultimate backstage pass!?

Finally, our secret project! A project so ground-breaking on an international scale, that it must remain behind the black curtain for now. But rest assured you will see it in the news soon and it will allow us to take the next move in educating students in filmmaking, globally. “One small step for a film school... One giant leap for filmmakers!” We are already in talks with the relevant officials to create a Metaversity for Film3.?

Meet the Phygital

Whilst we are not huge fans of buzz-words and phrases, we are embracing the concept of ‘PHYGITAL’ - an omnichannel experience blended with real life experiences. True filmmaking cannot be taught simply by entering an immersive environment, no matter how visually stunning it may be. We must ensure we maintain the balance between digital experiences and physical hands-on learning. The feel of the camera, the challenges and excitement of managing a group of human beings, all coming together to produce art in the form of film – whichever side of the camera they operate.

There clearly exist individuals who scorn the whole digital revolution and their opinions are as valid as anyone's. We at Raindance however, live by the ethos of innovation, disruption and challenging the status quo. We have championed independent film making for three decades and have the marks on our backs to prove it.?

We believe wholeheartedly in the skills and determination of our team, their commitment to supporting independent filmmakers through the good times and the bad... but imagine a world where our collective knowledge and experience meets the ground-breaking, disruptive technologies building the metaverse. It offers better collaboration, the opportunity to build exciting artistic and creative communities, which will raise the bar.

Thirty years is a long time.

During Raindance’s lifetime so far, we have seen the development and adoption of the mobile phone, the proliferation of social media, 9/11, the euro entering circulation, mapping of the human genome and exploration of Mars, to name but a few. Our own film industry has seen technological advances. ‘The Mandalorian’ is one of the first major productions to choose LED walls over green screens. And the benefits for the actors are just the tip of the iceberg. LED walls can make the lighting better, filming smoother, and in certain cases, cost a lot less.?

So, will we see the wavy white hair and obligatory sunglasses of myself as an avatar, delivering immersive filmmaking courses on screen, long into the next thirty years? I will leave that to you to decide whether it’s a good thing or not. For me, it’s about storytelling. and the future holds many opportunities to tell stories through the medium of film. I am passionate about grabbing those opportunities to tell better stories, in better ways with better access to pairs of eyes all over the globe.
