I started in an office job, where my boss noticed my knack for phone conversations. He handed me a product list and asked me to call customers to find out when they were placing their next order. That simple task boosted my confidence and sparked my interest in sales.

Taking a Bold Step

When I saw a field sales job advertised in the local paper, I decided to go for it. The job involved selling stationery across the county, and it came with a car, a basic salary, and commission. The prospect of earning more and having my own car motivated me more than ever.

The Interview That Changed Everything

At 19 years old, with no formal sales training, I was thrilled to make it to the final interview round. After an hour of questions, the interviewers presented a challenge: a role-play exercise selling ashtrays to a hotel group (Please remember this was 1987). I had 15 minutes to prepare, and I knew this was my chance to shine.

Embracing the Challenge

During the role play, I pitched my ashtrays confidently, handling objections like a seasoned pro. When the interviewers pointed out that the rooms were minimalist and didn't need ashtrays, I suggested sinking the ashtrays into the furniture with a cover featuring the hotel's branding.

Turning Obstacles into Opportunities

One interviewer remarked that this would require specially made furniture. Without missing a beat, I responded, "No problem! Our sister company makes bespoke furniture. We can provide exactly what you need." This quick thinking impressed them, and they placed an order for both ashtrays and furniture.

Breaking Barriers and Achieving Success

After a brief wait outside, I was invited back in and offered a job with a basic salary, uncapped commission, and a company car. I accepted immediately, thrilled to have my first car and a new career. I later learned that out of over 70 applicants, I was the youngest and the first woman they had hired in sales.
