I hope you learn something about how to refurbish your story - and how to leverage AI to do so. Let me know what questions you have. Let's figure it out!
Introduction: Life often feels like a race. We speed towards our goals until an unexpected turn forces us to pause. In these moments, the story we’ve found ourselves living—often shaped more by circumstance than by intention—can guide us if we are intentional, leave us reacting to whatever comes our way, or, at worst, cause us to spin out completely. In the best case, we have a story that drives us; in the middle case, we adapt as best we can; in the worst case, we lose control—just like on a wet race track that we are not used to. Like my experience on the wet track or Ricciardo's journey, we all face roads that test us unexpectedly.
Recently, after two years away from the racetrack due to health challenges, I was finally ready to drive again. But heavy rain on the day of my long-anticipated return was crushing. Even the racing school, which promised "rain or shine," had to pause.
Then, we got the green light. Fear mixed with exhilaration. The car slipped and gripped through standing water, and I adjusted with each lap. By nightfall, the sensation of the track stayed with me—learning and adapting even in my sleep.
Just like my return to the track was shaped by unexpected conditions, life can throw us off balance if we don’t adjust. And that’s exactly what happened to Daniel Ricciardo.
Navigating your core story feels like enduring the unexpected and letting your story guide your response. First, make it work. Then, refine it to last.
The Crossroad of Chaos—Daniel Ricciardo’s Cautionary Tale
Take Daniel Ricciardo. His core story was once crystal clear: boldness, fearlessness, speed. He embodied "The Honey Badger" spirit. But as his driving faltered, his story faltered too. He kept telling the same story—charm and charisma—but the core—his performance—was slipping.
Ricciardo’s story became disconnected from its purpose. Without intention, without refurbishing his core, he drifted. And in racing, drifting without control leads to wrecks.
Ricciardo’s story is a cautionary tale. Most of us never intentionally created our story in the first place. Instead, we made choices, worked hard, and followed opportunities. But over time, we realize our story needs intention. It’s not enough to let it drift, nor is it enough to create it once and leave it untouched. We must revisit and refurbish our core story, aligning it with who we are and where we want to go. Otherwise, like Ricciardo, we risk our story working against us.
I learned this firsthand during my sabbatical. It wasn’t just about taking a break; it was about rediscovering my core story and letting it guide me through a challenging time.
Explore Your Core Story—The Foundation of All You Do At some point, we all hit a crossroads. It’s not about surface-level stories—like sharing a hobby for thrills—but the core story shaping how we live. Your core story is your operating system. It drives you, informs your decisions, and shapes how you show up.
We often carry old narratives, believing they'll keep working if they once worked. But life changes. If you haven’t checked in with your core story, you may not be tapping into its full potential.
During a challenging moment in my sabbatical, I wrote: “I had defined my story long before this moment. I knew the path I wanted, even if I couldn’t control the chaos. My story—seeking rest, clarity, and perspective—guided me through. It wasn’t about control but about knowing the story I wanted to live.”
Tip: Take time to explore your core story. What’s shaped you? What’s your driving purpose, your "why"? It’s not easy, but start with the core—the moments, decisions, and values at the heart of your story.
Refurbish Your Core Story—Rebuild with Intention
Once you’ve uncovered your core, it’s time to refurbish it. The old version may have served you well, but life changes, and so must your story.
When I returned to the track, I wasn’t the same person. I had new fears, challenges, and strengths. I couldn’t just drive like I did two years ago—I had to rebuild my approach, lap by lap.
Just like my return to the track required a new approach, your story may need refreshing to align with who you are today.

Your core story needs that same attention. It may need a partial rebuild—a clearer truth, new direction, fresh perspective. Align your story with who you are now.
Refurbishing your story is about ensuring its function—your core—still works for who you’ve become. Then, refine it to endure and grow.
Tip: Focus on what’s changed in your life and how it impacts your story. Don't lose sight of who you are—the more you explore your core, the more clarity you gain. Therapy can also provide valuable insights, helping you understand how your unique blend of nature and nurture interplay with life's changes. Reflect on whether these changes have accelerated growth or created roadblocks. What parts of your story need refreshing? What new insights can you integrate?
Make, Live, and Tell Your Story with Purpose
Once you’ve explored and refurbished your core story, it’s time to fully embrace it.
Make your story by crafting, building, and understanding it deeply. Live your story by aligning your actions with your core, letting it inspire your direction, and living with intention.
And tell your story—share the incredible experiences of living your core story. It’s not just about something you share, it’s something you embody every day. In small conversations or big presentations, your story can change your life—and the lives of others.
When I hit the track, every lap became part of my story. I wasn’t just driving; I was making, living, and telling my story—growing, learning, and adapting. A core story is alive and evolving with us as we live it with intention.
When aligned with our core, the stories we make, live and tell create an impact far beyond ourselves. They shape businesses, inspire teams, and change lives.
Tip: Don’t overthink telling your story. Start small. Share moments that matter. Ask yourself: How can this story guide others? How can it inspire action?
Conclusion: Make, Live, and Tell Your Story with Intention
Crossroads are inevitable, but how we respond depends on the stories we make, live, and tell. The unexpected will happen—chaos or uncertainty—but your core story is your compass, guiding you through today and into the future.
I challenge you:
Form follows function. Get the story right, and it will guide you through chaos—helping you create a future aligned with your most profound purpose.

4 个月1000%, Matthew. This is so important to the work that I do with my clients that I've actually pivoted and expanded my business to focus on the power of seeing the story that got them here (through multiple lenses) and how this has the power to change their life, offer clarity and agency for the life they want to design. They are the authors of their own hero/heroine's story and they are the greatest masterpiece of their lifetime. Bravo to the work you are doing and continue to do!

4 个月The themes you are covering here are so relatable, both professionally and beyond. Sometimes life happens to us and I am definitely at the crossroads you have described in many ways. It is both scary and exciting. A quote I like from an artist, Andrew W.K. is: "After all, these ups and downs Aren't here to hurt us They're here to thrill us To make the rollercoaster ride of life Even more interesting And spectacular" I like the point that you have made - these events that happen in our lives are a good time for reflection and a time to analyze and rebuild our stories. As I analyze my core story, I also find myself asking "what are my core values?"

4 个月Great article, Matthew Woodget! A tip I often share when I work with teams/individuals on their "why" is to think about a moment when they were most proud. What was that moment about? Who was involved with you in that moment? What was the result? What made you proud in that moment? This begins to help shape a person's understanding of their why.
