One of the biggest mistakes marketers make is treating LinkedIn like any other social media platform. "You need to treat LinkedIn on its own. You need to understand the ecosystem, the algorithm. LinkedIn is a unique platform, with a distinct audience and content dynamics that require a tailored approach.

The LinkedIn algorithm is designed to prioritize content that aligns with the platform's core purpose: building professional connections and fostering thought leadership. I highlight the importance of understanding the different content pillars that perform best on LinkedIn, including personal storytelling, thought leadership, event-related content, and employee-generated content.

Personal content storytelling is the best-performing one. People love stories, and LinkedIn loves them too. On the other hand, thought leadership content, such as industry reports and trend analyses, is highly valued by LinkedIn's "silent community" - the 60% of members who consume content without actively engaging.

I also caution against the common mistake of relying too heavily on corporate content and advertisements. If you focus on the wrong goals and the wrong KPIs, you will see fewer views, less engagement, and less conversion. Instead, I recommend aligning marketing and sales efforts to maximize the impact of your LinkedIn presence.

Marketing is there for brand awareness, get out the name a few times, and then on an individual level, your sales people need to follow up, need to reach out. This is the game marketing and sales need to play nowadays.

Interestingly, the LinkedIn algorithm also places a strong emphasis on "dwell time" - the amount of time a user spends engaging with your content. The more you can keep people engaged as long as possible on your post and making them click on 'see more', the better.

Another key factor in the LinkedIn algorithm is the concept of "interaction." I explain that the more valuable comments your posts receive, and the more you engage with those comments, the more additional reach your content will gain. The keyword in the algorithm is interaction.
