In any thriving workplace, success starts with people. ??
It’s not just about having a great mission or impactful programs/products—it’s about the team behind the work. Building a high-performing team that’s motivated, engaged, and aligned with your mission is the secret to creating lasting impact.
But here’s the real question: What makes a team truly high-performing? Spoiler—it’s not just about hiring talented individuals. It’s about creating the right culture, environment, and systems that empower everyone to thrive.
Start with Your Organization or Company’s Values
A high-performing team starts with a clear understanding of your mission, vision, and values. When your team understands the “why” behind their work, they’re more likely to stay engaged and aligned with your goals.
For example, if your organization values equity and inclusion, ensure those values are reflected in your hiring practices, how you engage the community in programming, and policies and practices. Values should be more than words on paper—they need to be woven into how your team approaches their work every day.
When your values are deeply embedded in your culture, they become a guidepost for decision-making, conflict resolution, and collaboration. Take time to reflect on what this means to you, engage your team(s) in setting or understanding the values clearly, and ensure everyone knows how to live them out in their daily work.
Create Space for Reflection and Continuous Learning
High-performing teams don’t just power through tasks—they take time to reflect on their work, learn from experiences, and improve processes. Creating intentional spaces for reflection helps your team identify what’s working, what’s not, and where there’s room for growth.
For example, after completing a big project or event, hold a debrief session where team members can share lessons learned, suggestions for improvement, and celebrate successes. This not only helps refine processes but also shows your team that their insights and actions are valued.
When teams feel heard and have space to grow, they’re more likely to take ownership of their work and strive for excellence.
Build Trust Through Clear Communication
Trust is the foundation of any high-performing team, and it starts with clear communication and setting expectations that everyone understands. When team members trust their leaders and each other, they feel more empowered to take initiative, share ideas, and collaborate effectively.
Building trust isn’t a one-and-done activity—it’s ongoing. Leaders can foster trust by being transparent about decisions, admitting mistakes, and following through on commitments. The key is creating an environment where team members feel safe sharing their thoughts without fear of judgment.
You can weave quick activities into your team meetings – for an ice breaker, ask attendees “Define what trust in the workplace look like for you?” and have them share in a round-robin format. Hearing each other and engaging in conversation in reflection of share-outs is powerful for building trust as well. ??
Give Your Team Autonomy
Leaders, consider this your sign to officially stop micromanaging. Not only can it stifle creativity and motivation, but great leaders can trust their team members to do the work they’ve been hired to do and provide the support they need to succeed.
Providing this autonomy doesn’t mean your team will lack accountability or your support. Rather, it will empower them to make decisions, solve problems, and take ownership of their roles. When team members have the freedom to contribute their unique skills with the confidence that they're trusted to do so, they feel more invested in the organization’s success.
Encourage autonomy by setting clear expectations and providing the resources your team needs to succeed. Then, trust them to deliver and offer support when challenges arise.

Tip: Having regular 1:1 check-ins that are documented with action items to follow are effective mechanisms to stay connected, be supportive, and continue to build trust with team members.
Invest in Professional Development
A high-performing team isn’t static—it evolves as individuals grow and develop new skills. Investing in your team’s professional development shows that you’re committed to their growth and success.
Professional development doesn’t have to mean expensive conferences. It can be as simple as offering mentorship opportunities, hosting in-house training sessions, or providing access to relevant resources and courses.
When your team sees that you’re invested in their growth, they’re more likely to stay motivated and engaged in their work.
Lead by Example
Leadership sets the tone for the entire team. To build a high-performing team, we must embody the qualities we expect from our team members.
This means being accountable, transparent, and committed to continuous learning. It also means creating a culture where feedback is welcomed and acted upon. High-performing teams thrive in environments where leaders walk the talk and lead with integrity.
Tip: Active listening, and an “open door policy” from leadership goes a long way in supporting your colleagues, as well as teaching them how to be supportive leaders.
Build a Culture of Celebration
Recognizing and celebrating your team’s successes—big and small—goes a long way in maintaining morale and motivation. High-performing teams feel valued and appreciated, and regular recognition fosters a positive work environment.
Make celebration a regular part of your team culture. Whether it’s acknowledging someone’s hard work in a meeting or organizing a small event to celebrate a milestone, find ways to make your team feel seen and appreciated for their contributions.
This goes beyond birthdays, work anniversaries and performance metrics – create some new celebration touchpoints!? Here are some ideas to get you thinking outside-of-the-box: “Established most employer partnerships this month.” or “Had lunch/coffee with four staff persons not on my team this month, and learned about their role and what brought them to this company/organization.” or “Attended one community meeting per quarter and shared information about our organization.”?
