Did you know that 50% of businesses fail within their first two years? As a former med spa owner myself, I understand the dedication and passion you put into your practice. Today, I'm going to teach you how to avoid becoming one of the unlucky ones.
The reason most businesses fail isn’t external pressures; it’s internal weaknesses. The inside of the business must be strong enough to handle the demands placed on staff and management. Leaders need to know how to hold their team accountable. Accountability is the secret to success for any small business! In this blog, I’ll share why accountability works and how you can implement it into your practice operations.
For those of you who are new here, I’m Kelly Smith, CEO and founder of Projected Growth Consulting. With over 20 years in the medical aesthetics industry and having assisted over 5,000 practices, I’m an industry expert, author, and speaker who has built seven-figure businesses and beyond for my clients.
What is Accountability?
Accountability is being responsible for your obligations. As a manager or owner, you need to hold others accountable by reinforcing the completion of their tasks on time and ensuring they produce the expected results.
Step 1: Set Clear Expectations
Before you can hold your team accountable, it needs to be clear what your expectations are! This starts during the hiring process. When hiring a new team member, communicate the job description and expectations from day one. Don’t shy away from discussing the work they will be doing. If they can’t perform the tasks, you need to know right away. A high turnover rate can kill a business, so hire right.
Step 2: Provide Proper Training
Once you have a new hire, the next step is providing proper training. No matter how experienced someone may be, no one can jump into a new role without guidance. This is also the best time for them to get used to your standard operating procedures, as every business is different and you may have different needs or systems than their previous roles. Remember, training doesn’t stop once they're comfortable! Constant improvement and learning are essential. A stagnant team means a stagnant company. If you’re looking to grow your practice and your profits, you have to keep evolving.
Step 3: Set Measurable Goals
Give your team measurable goals so they know when they’re winning and when they’re off track. As the leader of your practice, reinforce the behaviors you want your staff to have. If they’re ahead of the game and profits are soaring, implement a bonusing system! Check out my video on the benefits of bonusing and how to use it in your med spa.
Step 4: Track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Your team should be responsible for KPIs relevant to their role, and there should be a standard system for recording these numbers that you can access at any time. Knowing your numbers is crucial for understanding your practice's performance. Holding your team accountable for these numbers ensures every facet of your med spa sees success. From marketing to sales to client treatments, you’ll easily identify areas needing improvement and who may need additional training.
The Benefits of Accountability
Implementing a policy of accountability subtly improves your company culture. Without accountability, you may see finger-pointing and blame-shifting among staff. Left unchecked, this can create a negative office environment that affects client experiences. It also impacts you, leading to long hours and burnout if employees aren’t taking action.
Accountability isn’t just about identifying holes in your business operations; it’s a culture shift! It will keep you from micromanaging or overworking yourself as you can trust your team to honor their commitments. Accountability is a two-way street, crucial for showing your team what winning looks like and rewarding their hard work. Success should not be taken for granted.
