How To Use Twitter To Turbocharge Your Content Strategy

Twitter is an online news and social networking service where users post and interact with ‘tweets’ or messages restricted to 140 characters.

According to Wikipedia, as of March 2016, Twitter had more than 310 million monthly active users. On the day of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Twitter was the largest source of breaking news, with 40 million tweets sent by 10 p.m. (Eastern Time).

Despite its reach and engagement, many businesses still don’t use Twitter, as they may not understand its power or potential. Many see it as a niche micro-blogging service, overflowing with inconsequential information, dominated by celebrities, gossip or mainstream media and news feeds.

If you think about Twitter as more than just another social media channel or content distribution platform, you may be surprised at the value you can derive for your business and brand.

So how do I use Twitter? I publish on Twitter with the aim of creating meaningful content, attracting and engaging prospective clients, driving SEO and ensuring my best creative thinking is captured:

  • Attract Clients: When regularly updated with well-researched, meaningful content, Twitter becomes a valuable resource for prospective clients and referral partners seeking information on your specific area of expertise. In our case, we focus on business strategy, increasing enterprise value, marketing and competitive strategy for medium sized B2B organisations.
  • Twitter As A Blog Post Index: Would you like to blog more often but find yourself getting stuck or wondering what to write about? Twitter can be an excellent source of inspiration for your blog posts as you can scroll back in your Twitter history to seek inspiration.
  • SEO: Twitter acts as a valuable breadcrumb trail of links and keywords for Google. For example, our keyword focus is: #B2B - #marketing - #strategy - #consulting - #Sydney - you will notice those hashtags appear regularly in my Tweets.
  • Capture And Explore Ideas: I use Twitter as a ‘digital scratch pad’ to capture ideas and explore new creative concepts. By Tweeting regularly, it ensures all your best creative thinking and valuable ideas are documented and published immediately in a summary form for later review and potential repurposing. I find the discipline required to articulate my thoughts in <140 characters is valuable. Brevity is next to godliness.

There is a lot more to do, but if you get the basics right, you have built a stable platform for continued business growth.

What is your Twitter strategy and how do you use it to drive business growth?

Very interesting Michael, I haven't given Twitter much time as I was told Aussies don't embrace it as much as say Facebook and Instagram (and LinkedIn of course). Would be interested to see some Australian stats on useage.

It's also an excellent relationship building tool and a cold calling tool leveraging the power of social listening to look for opportunities.
